Actually, there have been many cases of this; just search www.youtube for "car plows into protesters" or anything similar. This attracted more attention simply because of all the other stuff going on at the same time.

In the 60s, the hippies and nigger rioters thought they could destroy every university, every city, in the country -- 100 cities per summer, every summer, I don't know how many universities, for 10 years -- then they got their come-uppence at Kent State, and it all stopped.

It should have been obvious that throwing things at people who carry loaded guns is not a very smart thing to do.
