Knoxville’s first homicide victim of 2018 was accidentally shot in the back when her friend began playing with a handgun near Market Square shortly after midnight on New Year’s Day, court records show.
The victim, Kayla Viars, 27, of Loudon, Tenn. and the alleged shooter, 26-year-old Marques Dewayne Wheeler, were both passengers in a Nissan Altima being driven by Dominick Brown when the gun went off at approximately 12:15 a.m. Monday, according to an arrest warrant.
“All parties were riding around Market Square when (Wheeler) began playing with a .22-caliber handgun that he accidentally fired, striking the victim, Viars, who was the front seat passenger, in the back,” the warrant states.
