Hosting a site gets pricey once its high bandwidth... But I think the real killer here is DDOS protection. Attacks eat up bandwidth. The more attacks, the more bandwidth, which is $. Then the bigger the attacks, the more it costs hardware wise to counter them. It was a big deal when he got kicked off cloudflare. You need multiple data centers and fiber hookups to counter act these things. Plus its highly technical.

I got backstabbed on my rack space, so I cant really do shit at the moment. Im building out my own mini DC, and it will have what is needed to do a simple DDOS protection setup. Im still a year out before its functioning though, at least.

Its been fun. If the feds didnt hound dude to death, it wouldnt have gone this way.

It seemed like a misunderstanding of "shutting down the site," but I agree with a fire escape.

I am going to get something organized on Nostr, which is where I will also be publishing my articles. That might make this forum redundant.

I'm a bit uncomfortable not having my own site. But the reality is, I'm at the whims of someone even when I do have my own site, and according to everything I understand, Nostr is a lot less censorable than this site.

We should have always had a backup IRC channel though.

And there is a decent chance that if the main site goes down, this one will too. Right now, they're part of the same thing. So it might not be possible to keep this up for less than five figures a month, in which case I will just shut it down, because no one is paying that. Forum memebers in general are less likely to donate than rando readers.

This situation of needing all of these DDoS protection systems, a triple reverse proxy system, and whatever the fuck, along with paying hosts designed for spammers and various other unsavory people who can't host anywhere else (massive premium) makes it very complicated.

Technically, GU was never banned from Cloudflare an it's been under the radar generally. But yeah, the more I think about it, the more likely it is that this will go down too, because money.

I'm 90% on DS just shutting off. Something could happen, like my illness, which completely changes everything. But I've had these plans to write, and then even outside of the incident, I haven't done it. I would keep it online, but this is just not feasible to have it online. I might be able to work out some kind of static archive that is just up whenever it isn't being ddosed. Ddos is expensive, so they won't do it all the time. Also, I'm going to announce people can make full copies and host them. I'll leave it up through March, which will also be open to some magic event. But I'm letting staff go at the end of this month, I think.

I might keep one overpaid mod on the forums on Nostr, if it si even capable of being modded.

We might also be able to move the forum to Tor so we don't have to worry about DDos, ut I tink my sysops said this software won't work on Tor cleanly.

That ruby rails software we used to use works on Tor. If someone wanted to do the work to make something work, I would endorse it and pay for the hosting, post on it.

If not, I think Nostr is a pretty good option. The Nostur (that's the trade name of a specific app running Nostr) looks as clean as any other social media app on iPhone. I haven't used it but I've seen it on a friend's phone and watched videos. I think everyone will be happy with it. This forum has always been tough, despite the herculean efforts of @CryptWorld and other contributors. It couldn't possibly look/work any better than it does. But the annoying stuff is annoying to a lot of people - me less so, I miss the old interenet and this reminds me of it. But I also don't use a phone. I'm sure it's hell trying to use this in a browser on a phone, so I think people will enjoy the app. And I'll post my articles there.

Honestly, if Nostr would have been around in 2017, this all might have happened differently, and I would have saved literally millions of dollars. Well, maybe not plural, but literally over a million. People seem to have no idea... I don't say the numbers because they sound silly, it sounds like I'm lying. Now that I'm not soliciting donos, it's whatever. The basics were $17k a month. Then I got it down some due to new tech and new deals. But then add on all the other stuff, and it averages to around $20k a month, for 8.5 years... that ends up being right around 2 million. Maybe that's a high end estimate, I'm not an accountant, but the most conservative would be $15k a month, so about 1.5 millies.

One guy paid for most of that. There some people dropped some money here and there. I mean, there were some generous people. But holy shit, think of it.

Yeah, I would have went with Nostr. And if there were donations not used to pay that, I'd be getting a living off donos, and wouldn't likely be shutting down. I mean, I would feel kinda bad making that much personally on donos, I'm not a fucking gay spic, donations as profit is sick to me, so I kinda needed to spend it. This last year, I was in part just getting rid of the rest of the donation money I felt uncomfortable pocketing.

But yeah, I'll post on Nostr, Unz will probably keep reposting. I don't know how much I'll write full articles. I have real writing work now. It's ghost writing and not totally fun but it's paying the bills and doesn't bother me. Honestly, I just like typing. It does sound like you could save a bunch of money going tor only, could probably just do any random VPS at that point for both forum and website and then just make it repost to nostr or something, and then it would still be easy for people to make proper clearnet mirrors as well as have the social aspect of nostr.

I don't know the specifics of MyBB but I don't see why it wouldn't work well over tor.

I obviously don't know the specifics of your setup or how much traffic you push, but when doing tor only there is just a lot less to worry about, since you don't need to spend a lot of money on DDoS protection and multiple reverse proxies to keep the origin hidden.

There is also a lot of good tor-friendly monero accepting hosts these days.

I am not currently ready for that, I've decided to leave the status quo until April 1.

But if we can get the forum on Tor, we can drop the clearnet for the main site, it can probably be kept online. That seems like a reasonable plan. But yes, I would need some free tech support.

Probably, the forum should stay up regardless, but I can't pay the CDN anymore, so moving it to Tor would work fine. With a Tor option in Brave, it's not like it's complicated to log in. The forum doesn't really work on a phone anyway. And conversation might move to Nostr in the longer run. Anyway, bottom line is, I've stopped caring about non-paying anon readers. Any points I was going to make I've made. I guess the fact that so many are going along with boot lick orgy 26 indicates I would need to spend some months or years explaining "why this is bad" to people, but I don't care anymore. I do care about community people here, however, and I'm not trying to just nuke that. I still like reading/posting here, a lot of people have been involved a long time, I want to keep it up indefinitely (unless Nostr works out and naturally replaces it).
