From: Tue 10:23 AM Subject: Monday Night Cafe Racing report Short and sweet today! And I'm sure you ALL believe me! We had a splendid turnout for the racing. I was running a little late getting to Coffee Society, and as I pulled in I noticed that we had a nice sized group that night. Had to have been at least 18 bikes there. I pulled in and hopped off. To my amazement, more and more and more bikes kept arriving. We broke the record for the most bikes on a Cafe Racing night! I counted 30 bikes for sure at the beginning of the night. Wow! And I think I missed one. I was shocked to find another DR at the ride. I'd never seen one before, but there it was. A DR650 with street tires on it ridden by an older gentleman. And I do mean ridden. I saw him do a luverly stoppie on that thing! I hope I can ride half as good when I'm his age. (I'd settle for riding half as good at MY age!) We rolled off into the night, startling the snot out of the local citizenry by pouring down the road like a flood of water. Their cages were like rocks in the torrent of bikes swirling past them. It was FABULOUS! With a group this large, it was hard to keep track of all the individual hooliganism, so I'm going to present highlights in sort of a collage format. ****** At the Campbells Roasting Company, a birthday girl who had turned 21 asked to pose with the entire group on the back of Creech's gorgeous Moto Guzzi. When it was determined that we all wouldn't fit on the back, we let her sit there and we stood around in a menacing group. She wasn't NEARLY drunk enough for someone who'd turned 21. Then she and her friends egged certain hooligans on so they could get pictures of wheelies. It was fairly amusing. No RacerBoy spottings. ****** At a stoplight, we spotted a "cop", and everybody tried to look a little respectable. He was going the opposite direction and was stopped at the light on the other side of the intersection. He got a green light first and started to drive past. A spontainious roar erupted from the crowd as we saw that it was RENTAL SECURITY! Engine revs started hitting 10k, and when the light turned green on our side, it was like the flag at Sears Point. That was the fastest start I have EVER seen on a Monday night. The ENTIRE PACK took of with throttles WFO. We had a newbie there (Kari) who wheelied her bike for the first time taking off so fast. It was an epiphany. ******* We got a flash of Mortality (Sorcerer, you shoulda been her for this. You'd have creamed your shorts.) on the Highway heading to Coffee Society at the end of the night. Some truck suddenly decellerated in the highway with no brakelights coming on. All engine braking, apparently. As the group struggled around this sudden blockade, with several near misses, I got to witness a rear brake on a bike lock up at 70+ mph. I hope I never see that again unless it's a stunt rider. We arrived badly shaken and fairly pissed. Some hot tea and a plan to get food was in order. ******* Standing around jabbering at one of the shops, we saw a scooter going by. In another act of spontainious goofiness, the entire group of us starting cheering and hooting for the scooter. He never looked back. I think we scared him. We had 28 bikes at that time, and not a single one of them parked anywhere besides ON the sidewalk. It was like an bike dealership had set up shop. ******** Moike shared a heartwarming story about how important it is to make sure you get the right size ring. Ask him about it, and accept no substitutes. ******** At TGIF, I crashed on the stair trying to ride up them a little too slowly. CLUNK! Right into the bannister. I had to pick the bike up, get it unflooded, and try it again. Poor little bike. It's not even broken in yet and I've already crashed into a mountain and a bannister. Though it DOES jump down the stairs quite nicely. Stupid Scrubbo Tricks. Stuff your mom would slap you for. ******** We saw Keith on his BRAND NEW BLACKBIRD! He drove it from the dealer to Cafe Racing. Gorgeous bike. He was practicing the "popping big ass wheelies" school of engine break in. And I thought _I_ was abusing my poor little bike early on. ******** The die hards that hung on to the end got to see Pat bounce into a window, nearly smack his helmet on a concrete pillar, and fall FLAT ON HIS ASS! Sorry about that Pat. ;) ******** Well, those were the highlights. Many wheelies and a few stoppies have been ommitted. The best part, of course, was the laughter and smiles and good natured pot shots we took at Mike every time he tried to organize the rabble. Come Cafe Racing EVERY Monday Night. 7:00 at the Coffee Society. Be there, or we'll come over to your house and practice burnouts on your lawn.
