The great interest shown in BALLS123 inspired me to spend the hours needed
to improve it. BALL_ISTICS FOR _123_ AND OTHER SPREEDSHEETS RELEASE _2_.0
is the result. Most of the algorithms are from a public domain basic
program. Various programs using these same algorithms list different
authors. The one named most commonly is William C. Davis, JR.. Thanks and
credit to all those who wrote the various basic and compiled programs. I
believe that I have improved and changed enough so that this template is
mine, mine, mine.

One shortcoming of the basic or compiled basic programs is the fact that
you have to either start over from the beginning or else make a whole new
run to see what differences changing the variables makes in the results.
That means you waste a lot of computer paper printing the various results
or have to make a lot of notes.

The BALL1232 template allows you to change 5 notational entries--CALIBER,
POWDER(TYPE), GRAINS(POWDER WEIGHT), CASE, OR BULLET(TYPE)--so that your
printout is unique to a particular loading.

The next 9 variables--VELOCITY(MUZZLE VELOCITY IN FPS), WEIGHT(OF BULLET IN
GRAINS), COEFF.(BALLISTIC COEFFICIENT FROM THE BULLET MFG OR MANUAL), START
RANGE (IN YARDS FOR TABLE), INCREMENT(IN YARDS FOR TABLE), ALTITUDE(IN FEET
AT ACTUAL OR PLANNED LOCATION), TEMP. FAHT.(OUTSIDE AIR TEMPERATURE IN
DEGREES), SCOPE HT.(HEIGHT OF SIGHT CENTERLINE ABOVE CENTERLINE OF BORE),
AND ZERO RANGE(WHERE "DEAD-ON" BULLET IMPACT IS DESIRED)--allow you to do
the "what ifs" that spreadsheets do best.

The accuracy is quite good for most bullets and velocities. Paper
ballistics are merely guidelines--actual firing entails many more variables
than the program allows--but in most cases are accurate enough for
government work if you do your job. Velocity should always be obtained by
actual chronograph reading, the more, the better. Published ballistics are
notoriously optimistic and misleading. An afternoon with a chronograph
will prove it easily.

This template was worked up using Microsoft Works 1.05. The excellent
graphing ability of M-S Works lets you make really neat X-Y charts using
both sides for Y series. For example, you can put velocity and energy on
the left side, trajectory and wind deflection on the right side, and yards
along the bottom. Other programs have greater or lesser graphing support.

Two warnings:
ALWAYS CHOOSE A "ZERO RANGE" THAT MATCHES ONE OF THE INCREMENTS IN THE
"YARDS" COLUMN. FAILURE TO DO SO--SAY CHOOSE A ZERO OF 260 YARDS WHEN THE
INCREMENTS SKIP FROM 250 TO 275--WILL GIVE YOU WEIRD READINGS. A WAY
AROUND THIS IS TO ADJUST THE "START RANGE" TO MAKE THE ZERO FALL ON ONE OF
THE INCREMENTS. IN THE ABOVE EXAMPLE, ADJUSTING "START RANGE" TO 10 YARDS
WILL MAKE THINGS SANITARY AGAIN.

THE OTHER WARNING IS TO MAKE A WORKING COPY AND LEAVE THE ORIGINAL ALONE.
IF THE FILE IS UNPROTECTED OR UNLOCKED AND ANY OF THE MANY HIDDEN COLUMNS
CHANGED, THINGS GO SOUR IN A HURRY. THIS SPREADSHEET GOES FROM A1 TO AB24.
ANYTHING YOU CHANGE OTHER THAN THE 9 VARIABLES IS AT YOUR OWN RISK.

NOW FOR THE GOOD PART:

This is SHAREWARE! That does not mean it is FREE! I spent a lot of time
on this modification and if you use it, I would like a little return on my
time. What do you get for your money? A lot!

Registered users receive telephone support for a year. They go on a
mailing list to receive updates and other new products as they come from my
productive little mind. And, best of all, they keep me off WELFARE.

A commercially marketed version of BALLISTICS FOR 123 AND OTHER
SPREADSHEETS with a few more bells and whistles and some neat related
programs can be ordered for $39 POSTPAID from the address below. Specify
5.25 or 3.5 disks. This SHAREWARE version can be registered for the cost
of a case of beer or $10--whichever is less where you live.
