= = Interpersonal relations are a key in this business. We call it
unofficially "schmoosing". You will get most of your information from
open source intelligence ( like a newspaper history of crime in
the target area ). In the private sector you need to establish a
Police liason in your area of operation- or the counsel security
or commerce officer if overseas and near the US embassy or
consulate. Also local Private Investigators are a good source
of information. You could hire one for a few hours to research
the crime stats or to give you a background report on a venue.

Remember, if you have a celebrity client, the business owner
will WANT to be associated with a visit. You will have to study
some sales techniques on how to overcome objections. Send
them a press kit and a trinket or two.

Make sure you don't step on egos. Ask them how THEY have
the security planned, and then make adjustments from there.
You may end up ignoring most of their effort, but you can stroke
their ego. Remember, being a diplomat is telling someone to
go to hell in such a way, that they look forward to the trip.

There will be times however, when you just can't overcome
objections and people will be a real pain. I had a similar incident
at an un-named Club in San Francisco. The club is
used to Secret Service and State Dept Security people since they
have many politicos as speakers. I had an incident where during
the advance, the party was cooperative, but during the actual
operation the person had a fit because I held an elevator... it went
down hill from there, so backups had to be used.

No matter what you do, Murphy will rear his head, so have alternate
plans in place when you do your advance, and when all else fails
you have to use common sense, adapt and improvise. Sometimes
you just piss people off no matter what, and that is what a good PR
person is for. Try to turn their energy around into something positive.

Also remember that the threat does NOT increase with spontaneous
actions on the part of the principal. EXCEPT and this is a BIG exception-
along what we call a "fence Line" a fence line is a defined de-markation
point between the crowd and your protectee... like barricades. A fence
line is the most dangerous part of working a crowd.

If your principal hops out and deviates from the route plan, there
(statistically) is no increase in threat-- unless they do it in an area
that already presents a high threat level.
