= = OK, lets talk about some of these and go a little more in-depth.
Please
don't lurk, participation is key, I'll get awfully bored if all I do is post
information.

These are brief examples to enlighten. We will go over checklists
in depth in the next series on advance work.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
>=========
>- Protecting the Public Figure -
>
>Your Goals:
>
>1. Minimize exposure for both your protectee and you ( from ALL hazards )
= = How do we do this ? Advance work is the key. During the advance
you should be looking for ANYTHING that is a hazard. Some things to
look for include:
---------------
1. Intelligence of the venue/area. In the case of a celebrity protectee for

example, is there a known threat that is in the area- like a known stalker
or nuisance fan ? Identification and counter-surveillance of known
problems can assist you a great deal in the planning phase.

2. Physical hazards: Protectees medical condition as it relates to the
area ( ie: reaction to chemicals and you plan to tour a wafer fab ), general
fire hazards, and crime hazards of the area ( ie: your protectee plans to
visit a youth center in S. Central Los Angeles, and he just HAS to have
a Ho HO ( small cake-like snack for those of you outside the US ) and
wants you to stop at the 7-11. Do you know the difference between
tagger grafitti and gang territorial graffiti ? If you don't it could get
you
killed or injured. ( more about gangs and gang signs later ). When it
comes to crime, you must " think like a criminal " to find holes in your
defenses. I'll go over some specifics on how to be a "hard target"
later.

3. Venue hazards: Last fire inspection date, is it sprinklered, does the
hotel have a working fire-alarm system ? Smoke detectors in each room ?
If it is a special event or concert, are there pyrotechnics involved ? How
many exits are available to you and where do they lead, etc. When was the
last time the elevator was inspected ? On what floor is the room located ?
( anything above the 6th floor- forget about fire apparatus reaching you )

4. Vehicle and travel hazards: What type of aircraft is it, what is the
safety record for the carrier, and the country of travel. For example
US carriers can no longer fly over Afghanistan on the way from Europe
to Asia, but some Asian carriers still do. This decreases your odds of
survival since there is no air traffic control over Afghanistan, and no
effective Search and Rescue in event of a crash. Are you scheduled
to travel via commuter airline- they have poor safety records in bad
weather. What airports are you utilizing- some have terrible security
measures in place that increase your chances of being a victim of
terrorism.

Vehicles: Mechanical condition ? Do you need an armored vehicle
for your anticipated threat level ? Backup vehicle available ? Low
Profile vehicle used or a high profile ( and with terrible handling
characteristics ) limousine.

= = Lets discuss these so far.

Still to come:
>2. Maximize un-predictability
>3. Ensure safety at all times for your protectee
>4. Minimize liability exposure or embarassment for your protectee/employer
