Optional, but highly encouraged. It is REQUIRED in the
hands-on class.

End date of exercise will be 1/20/95

What to do:
^^^^^^^^^^^^
Get a pad and pencil/pen to keep with you or some other type
of device to record "marks". Keep it with you at work, in the
car, on walks, etc.

I want you to put a mark on your paper (or whatever you wish to
use) for the next 5 days when any of the incidents below take
place. Use a big "X" everytime and total the numbers at the
end of the day. I want to discuss the results at the end of the
recording period. Keep a running daily total.

I know some of this may sound stupid or juvenile, but the exercise
was taught to me by an ex-Secret Service Agent who is a good
friend, and one who won the outstanding protection award for
5 years straight. It tunes you into your environment.

GOAL: Your goal is to eliminate < any > marks on the paper by the end
of the 5 day recording period. Not always possible, but your goal is
to have a decreasing linear line.

Events that will case you to put a mark on the paper:
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

1. ANYTIME someone comes up on you, either in the street, in the
car, subway, wherever and you did not notice the person when
they were at least 30 feet away, OR anytime you are daydreaming
in public--- Put a mark down for each incident.

2. Anytime you are driving a motor vehicle, and a police officer comes
up behind you for any reason. a. At highway speeds, if you did not
see the police vehicle ( marked only ) from at LEAST 1/4 mile away
on a straight road- PUT a mark down on the paper. b. On city
streets, if you did not see the vehicle behind you for at least 30
     seconds before you noticed it.
( Please note I am using the PD as a test since they have the most
marked vehicles on the road at any one time, and are out 24 hrs
a day + people seem to get automatically nervous whenever one is
behind them on the road :-) . Mark it down.

3. Anytime you are working at a stationary task- really concentrating, and
someone walks up on you- and you don't notice them until they are
right on top of you. Mark it.

4. Anytime you ignore your "sixth sense" and walk into a situation where
you feel uncomfortable or in danger. Listen to your inner voice.
    Mark it.

Lets start with these three examples, if you have questions please
e-mail me PRIVATELY and NOT to the list ie: don't use the reply
feature. We will expand this exercise later, but I want you to get
a "feel" for it.
