SURVIVAL BIBLE 2001 ADD-ON 5-5-95/3 SURVIVAL KIT CONTENTS From: bruce@faxmail.co.nz (Bruce Simpson) Newsgroups: misc.survivalism Subject: survival kit contents Date: Tue, 21 Nov 1995 12:40:43 GMT What would be the recommended content of a "bush survival kit" that could be carried by one man and allow a reasonably long length of survival in the wilds. Let's assume the following: 1. A plentiful supply of meat (rabbit, deer, pig) is available but some kind of weapon (gun, bow, etc) would be needed. 2. Climate is highly variable from 90 degree heat to 20 degree cold with strong winds. 3. Contour varies from flat grassland to steep brush and forest. 4. Safe water is reasonably commonplace 5. Self defense (from man or beast) is not an issue 6. Building semi-permanent dwelling would be desirable I assume that the basics of such a kit would include: - water containers (maybe half a gallon) - one or 2 good knives (for food preparation & general cutting - some kind of dried food (legumes, etc) to provide a balanced diet - string, rope, plastic sheeting - a good sleeping-bag - a 1 or 2-man tent - warm clothing - an axe or hatchet - a collapsable spade/shovel - cooking utensils (pot, cup, plate, fork, etc) - matches/lighter - first-aid supplies - a rifle and ammo - galvanised wire for construction - seeds to grow vegetables Regarding a rifle, obviously something that is capable of killing game ranging from rabbit through to small deer and pigs is necessary but just as important is the ability to carry a large amount of amunition. This sort of rules out the .308, 30-06 or even 30/30. I wonder if a 22mag would fit the bill -- remembering that a humane kill is not as important as minimal meat damage and an ability to pack maybe a year's worth of ammo (worst case: 2 rounds per day = 700 rounds for a year). The raison d'etre for such a kit would be to provide enough equipment and suplemental food to establish a semi-permanent dwelling and survive a year or so without reliance on the outside world.
