DID YOU KNOW? Squandering Our Children's Future The admitted indebtedness of the U.S. government exceeds $2,500,000,000,000 ($2.5 trillion). Adding unfunded future com- mitments to this staggering amount brings the total to more than $13 trillion. This is debt that the past two generations have left for their children and grandchildren, none of whom had a single thing to say about this crushing obligation. Today's youngsters will have to pay for the spending sprees of their elders - with their labors, or their freedom. Pouring Gasoline on the Flames In a February 1989 interview, U.S. Surgeon General C. Everett Koop stated: "In 1987, teenagers saw more repetitive, factual, ex- plicit, clear educational material in every medium in reference to the transmission of sexual disease. In spite of that, in 1987, the incidence of infectious syphilis and of penicillin-resistant gonor- rhea climbed at a steeper rate than at any time in the previous 16 years in the 14-17 age group." Nevertheless, Dr. Koop remains committed to promoting these same sex education courses in the schools of America. His adamant refusal to realize that explicit instruction about sexuality leads to rising promiscuity betrays in- credible blindness. The Two Faces of Gorbachev When the world's premier Communist visits the West, especially the United States, he presents a smiling and cooperative image because he is seeking help for his financially destitute regime. On such occasions, everything he says and does should be taken with a large grain of salt. But when Mikhail Gorbachev addresses fellow Communists, as he did in Moscow at the huge gathering of party officials to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Bolshevik Revolution on November 2, 1987, his words carry far more meaning. On that special occasion, he ended his three-hour speech to 6,000 fellow Communists with: In October 1917, we parted with the Old World, rejecting it once and for all. We are moving toward a new world, the world of Communism. We shall never turn off that road. In spite of this clear statement of Communist determination to rule the world, most of this nation's media and most of our political leaders have Americans believing that Gorbachev is a different kind of Communist, that Communism is mellowing and is no longer a threat, and even that we should increase programs that deliver massive amounts of aid, credits, equipment, and technology to the USSR. Kremlin leaders are surely delighted. Three Rs: Reading, 'Riting and Russification At their Geneva summit meeting in November 1985, President Reagan and Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev agreed to a broad range of accords in the "scientific, technical, educational, cultural and other fields." One of the agreements, authored by education experts from both nations, details plans to use computer technology "to restructure the education of young children, beginning in the third grade." It calls for the United States to supply the computers and the specialists to train Soviets to use them, while other Soviet experts create the course materials. Yes, you read correctly: Soviet educators are writing courses to teach" American children. Dad Pays the Bills, Mom Pays the Taxes Steady increases in federal, state and local taxes have already become such a burden that, in many families, one spouse works to pay for family needs and the other works to pay all the taxes. In the process, the family - the basic unit of any healthy civilization - becomes a victim. Some Allies! In the single month of October 1987, Western European banks supplied the Soviet Union with over $7 billion in credits that were not specified for any particular use. This badly needed infusion of hard currency went to the Kremlin at a time when the annual cost to U.S. taxpayers for defending Western Europe from Communism approximates $100 billion - a major portion of the U.S. defense budget. Where Our Money Goes In 1986, the USSR received $12 billion in undesignated credits from banks in Western Europe and the United States. This amount of money covered the Kremlin's costs that year for propping up the USSR's puppet regimes in Cuba, Nicaragua, Angola, Vietnam and Ethiopia. Take From the Middle Class, Give To Everyone Else In 1980, the late Congressman Larry McDonald observed in one of his speeches: There's been a basic shift in the philosophy of our government - away from the concept that government's function to pro- tect life and property over to the concept that the government is the agent for redistribution of income. Today, 60 percent of the federal government's activity falls into the category of "transfer payments." This is where the power of government is used to take money from those who earned it and transfer it to those who did not. What Dr. McDonald described is Marxism, pure and simple. Since 1980 when he spoke out, the problem has worsened as gov- emment power continues to grow. In 1983, Dr. McDonald and 268 others perished aboard the ill-fated KAL 007 jetliner, attacked by Soviet fighter planes over the Sea of Japan. Our own government issued a mild protest, then resumed business as usual with the Kremlin. That New-Time Religion Secular humanists deny God's existence, condemn belief in an afterlife, attack religion as a "disservice to the human species," call on all to establish their own systems of ethics, seek a socialized economy and an end to independent nations, and strive to establish an atheistic world government. Communists agree. In 1961, the U.S. Supreme Court (Torcaso v. Watkins, 367 U.S. 488) explicitly designated "secular humanism" as a form of "reli- gion." Other Court decisions have barred any trace of traditional religion from America's schools and most public places. But secular humanism - even though defined as a "religion" by the Court - runs rampant in the tax-supported schools of our land. THE JOHN BIRCH SOCIETY In December 1958, a small group of Americans joined together to form a pro-American, anti-Communist educational organization. Led by the late Robert Welch, a Massachusetts-based business- man, they named their endeavor for Captain John Birch, the remarka- ble missionary-turned-soldier whose exploits during World War II won him numerous decorations and the status of "legend in his own time.' The cold-blooded murder of Captain Birch by Chinese Com- munists in August 1945 earned him the distinction of being America's first casualty in the Cold War. The John Birch Society has always sought to create awareness: about the marvelous system of government established by our na- tion's founders, and about forces both within and without America working to change it. Never a "political" organization supporting or endorsing candidates, the Society seeks to inform the public about current events, history, economics and the workings of a free country. We believe that arming good citizens with accurate information is the proper and effective way to insure good government. Our beliefs and our goals are summarized in the motto, "Less government, more responsibility, and with God's help, a better world." We seek to accomplish these ends through a program where education is our total strategy and truth our only weapon. On behalf of tens of thousands of members throughout the United States, we extend a cordial invitation to all Americans to investigate our work. We are confident that the vast majority of those who examine what we do will be pleased to know that The John Birch Society not only exists, but also that it continues to attract the support and energy of fellow citizens. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ To: The John Birch Society P.O.
