Dr. Fox was a major contributor to the infamous/inaccurate Time article on dogs, and has given interviews on the superiority of the "Natural Dog" to purpose-bred dogs. He is also mentioned in "The Hijacking of the Humane Movement" by Rod and Patti Strand (Doral Publishing, Wilsonville, Oregon, 1993): < P> "HSUS Vice President Michael W. Fox told Newsweek in 1988: 'Humane care is simply sentimental, sympathetic patronage.'"

HSUS has in 1992 placed their materials with 2,000,000 school children. Many folks feel that HSUS is somehow connected with their local shelter and that donations to HSUS will help with local animal problems and issues. Nothing could be further from true. There's no connection between the local program and the HSUS. Essentially what happened is that a statistician with little background in the animal fiel (who happens to be a friend of mine) took the total budget of a major national organization which happens to run a shelter, and divided it by the number of animals it handles, not realizing that this organization was one of only two major national animal advocacy groups which also hold animal control contracts, and that accordingly he was going to come up with a very unrepresentative number--which as well as animal care, was going to include all sorts of other costs that advocacy groups do but shelters don't. Fox describes his favorite zoo exhibit: a large mirror behind some bars with the caption, 'Homo Sapiens, a dangerous predatorial tool- and weapon-waking primate. Status: endangered by its own doing." Fox and others argue that the educational function of zoos could be better met with documentary films, that zoos do more harm than good because the create diseased and frustrated animals. He describes the behavior of caged animals, for example their relentless pacing, as neurotically repetitive compulsions resulting from captivity and stress. Michael W. Then we have that cute postcard the HSUS managed to weedle into every home in the country by suckering the US Postal service into delivering these things at no cost to the HSUS most likely! Remember that little dittie about 2-3 years ago? It was distributed on a platform of dog bite prevention week or some such, supposedly to make the public aware of dog bites (As if the media hype on Rottweiler and pitbull bites wasn't enough already..) ANd get this, it stated; "For more information send a SASE to: The HSUS.." In other words, recipients already funded the distribution of those junk mailed post cards, now with this obvious fund raising vehicle/comeon, if they take the bait and want more info it costs a SASE to get on the HSUS junk mail list that sends you mail every month for the rest of your life begging for donations.. The whole thing was a fraud in my opinion, solely designed as a cleverly disguised fund raising vehicle! Lets not forget the infamous TIMES magazine article and Dr M Fox!
