The following is a very loose transcription of an editorial in a trade magazine for the National Association of Federally Licensed Firearms Dealers Jan. 1990 by Andy Molchan, President of N.A.F.L.F.D. that is hereby offered WITHOUT PERMISSION OF THE AUTHOR. My apologies to the author but I believe this is worth reading and discussing. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- From the election of President Kennedy in 1960 to now, not one single government betterment program has worked, not one. Every socialist betterment program has been a failure and has been counter productive! Everything, not one single success. Bussing, welfare, the war on poverty, public housing, etc., all failures. At the top of the list is gun control. Everyplace where honest people have been denied the ownership of guns, crime has increased! If you want a guaranteed increase in violent crimes, just have more gun control. I can guarantee that California five years from now, after the ban of semi-autos will have more crime than it did in 1991. The more anti-gun laws they pass, the greater will be the increase in crime. Gun control is yesterdays idea, based on yesterdays Marxist socialism. It's yesterdays idea that socialism is the key to paradise. It's yesterdays idea that socialism is salvation, and all you need is complete government control of everything, and paradise on earth is guaranteed. It's yesterdays socialist idea that all you need is all private property (guns especially) in the hands of the government and we'd have the perfect society. Just like Marx dreamed, no crime, no poverty, no want, no violence, heaven-on-earth. Nice idea, only problem is that everyplace it's been tried it produced a hell-on-earth. What are the new realities? Marxist anti-gun, anti-property is an 1880 idea, and completely discredited by history. What are tomorrow's ideas and facts? What is the reality of the 90's? The reality is that government has no ability to address serious social problems. Government is are powerless to control criminals, helpless in the struggle to stop the drug epidemic and despite spending hundreds of billions on efforts to improve the economic status of a relatively few american citizens, has lost the war on poverty. Exactly the same result will be the reality in the war on drugs and the war on crime. Why? The police have been defeated! The police have no offensive power, the never were intended to be an offensive force against criminals. Police are strictly an after-the-fact force. After your home is robbed, they will be there, after your car is stolen, they will be there. After you are mugged, robbed, raped, or murdered, they will be there, making chalk marks and filling out reports. The police are not protecting you and are not there to protect you! A recent court decision found the police not negligent in failing to respond for a murdered citizens urgent plea for help. Why? The court maintains that the police are only a protection of society as a whole and not of individuals and therefore are not obligated to protect any single person. For some Americans, me included, having the police getting to the scene of my murder with chalk drawn and notebooks at the ready is simply not good enough! The anti-gun people in Washington just can't seem to understand that, which is what the heart of this debate is about. They say "Just trust us, we will take care of you. Everything will be all right if you just let us take control". Meanwhile, our cities are war zones and the police are still not protecting anyone. The honest street cop has nothing to do with the failure of the police. The honest street cop is great! Every American should be eternally thankful that we have honest street cops who will put up with this no-win system. The failure of the police is caused by 30 years of liberal dominated Congress that has been brutally insensitive to honest middle class citizens. The failure of the police is due to 30 years of radical law professors , and radical politicians, who have distorted and perverted the very idea of "rule of law" into something that works against honest citizens and police. Many of the politically appointed police chiefs in the nations large cities, with aspirations of higher office, take the side of these radical politicians and the left-wing big media and kiss their ass in the hope of winning political friends. The liberal anti-gun groups in America are just like the Communists in Eastern Europe, They take an idealistic concept and force it upon their unwilling subjects. And they fail, and fail again, and fail again, and they just keep on doing what fails. This is what's so frightening about them, they refuse to learn anything. And like the Communists, they will blame their failures on the failure of the people to embrace their ideals, and not question the ideals themselves. They remind me of the joke about the airline pilot announcing to the passengers" Ladies and gentlemen, we are hopelessly lost and are running out of fuel, but you will be happy to know that we are making excellent progress". One of the first rules of good management is "when you find yourself in a hole, quit digging!" When the liberals find themselves in a hole, their answer is they need a bigger hole! They hope it will turn into that tunnel that they are always seeing light at the end of. Taking guns away from honest American citizens is a complete absolute failure. The more gun laws government passes, the more street crime goes up. The record is as clear as the economic failure of Communism. Of all the bad things about gun control, the very worst is that it has destroyed the trust that was basic to the American system of government. Thomas Jefferson, Alexander Hamilton, George Washington, George Mason, Ben Franklin, all of them, looked at Europe and saw an "us versus them" system. In Europe it was the government versus the people. Our founding fathers created a government where the people ruled. Firearm ownership was specifically put into the Constitution because if the people are the government and the people are armed and strong, then the government is strong. It is crystal clear that the framers of our constitution wanted Americans to own the latest military firearms. There were 'gun accidents' and criminal use of guns in Jefferson's time, and he lived till 1826. He never changed his mind about private military gun ownership. The left-wing liberals have reestablished the old "us versus them" system. Today it's the government versus the people. The government no longer trusts the people, and thus can not trust them with firearm ownership. Have we forgotten that it is irrelevant what government wants? The only purpose that our government has is to serve the people, not aspire to be our master! Gun control is a perversion and corruption of relationship between the people and government that was the core of Americas success as a democracy. ty to add
