"Now that the liberals have made our society too dangerous to live in, they want to remove from us the means by which we may defend ourselves." The vultures are circling now. You all saw the editorial cartoon in the Kansas City Star on Friday, June 22 which had as its subject matter a direct comparison between us NRA members and child pornographers. By the time you read this, a contingent of NRA members will have taken direct action in response to this scurrilous slander on our collective characters: We will picket the Star's offices. I am looking forward to determining as to the amount and type of broadcast media coverage we get; I suspect that we will be quoted out of context or, equally bad, totally ignored. The coverage we get will show us all where we stand with our local media... Many of you recall two years ago when New York Governor Mario Cuomo said that all NRA members "drank beer and beat their wives". A prominent mainline Protestant minister recently said that the NRA was "THE single largest threat to the safety of the American people". HCI ads depict Klan people as being NRA dupes. Wayne LaPierre, new EVP of NRA recently stated last week that "the mood in Congress is the ugliest I've ever seen. I've had congressman come up and tell me to my face: 'Take your best shot'". He stated further that a media analysis recently found that HCI has gotten what amounts to free advertising (presented as "news coverage") to the tune of $10,000,000- worth. Speaking of free advertising, I know that you all curled up in front of your TV on Sunday, June 16th to watch "Without Warning: The James Brady Story", which was the longest free commercial for HCI that I've ever seen. DOES THE FACT THAT THIS THING WAS PRESENTED ON THE EVENING PRECEDING THE WEEK OF THE SCHEDULED VOTED IN THE SENATE ON THE BRADY BILL INDICATE ANYTHING TO YOU??? Watch for my review of this film in the K.C. Jones newspaper in the July edition. It was written it in a completely fair, objective, and unbiased manner. In fact, it is FULLY as fair, objective, and unbiased as the film was! Mayor Emanuel (Mr. Homicide Weapon) Cleaver said last week that he did not receive an invitation to the Jewel Ball this past week. Another was hand-delivered to him and he attended. Before winning the mayoral campaign, Cleaver claimed that he had not received the WMSA candidate gun-rights opinion survey which I sent to his REGISTERED HOME ADDRESS, and so I personally hand-delivered another. Funny - he didn't respond to that one, either. I suppose it's nice that our new mayor will honor an invitation to an annual soiree for the advantaged, old-money crowd but can "flick off" the interests of the estimated 90,000-plus gun owners in the metro Kansas City area. Mayor Cleaver attended the Jewel Ball on the evening before the Gay Rights Pride parade. Interestingly, the Reverand Cleaver has appointed, not one, but TWO persons to serve as liasons to the "gay community" here in Kansas City. Now, I am as open-minded a guy you'd ever want to meet (big grin!) but personally, I feel that the 90,000 law-abiding, gun- owning community of citizens here deserve a little respect, too. Don't you? Would anyone be up to inviting the Reverand Mayor Emanuel "Mr. Homicide Weapon" Cleaver to address the concerns of Pioneer members in a special meeting? Besides myself, I mean? Kurt Cotton, Ted Deacon, and myself had the opportunity recently to debate gun control with a pretty young lady recently. This affable young woman (who lives in an apartment in mid-town KC) "knew" every single thing that HCI wants people to "know". Kurt, Ted and I made the basic points, focusing upon the spin given by the media to firearms ownership issues, including the "collective rights" argument, the unpublicized high incidence of lawful, life-saving uses of handguns every year versus the over-publicized criminal misuse of firearms, the myth of "crimes of passion" committed with firearms, and the best argument of all, namely, that GUN CONTROL KILLS IN EVERY JURISDICTION IN WHICH IT HAS BEEN APPLIED. Well, to the young lady's credit, she listened to us, accepted some reading material which we produced (including my article in K.C. Jones last month on the Brady bill), and promised to read it all. I ran into her last week and she asked me if I would reserve her a spot in our next basic handgun self-defense course for women. I told her that I would MAKE a position available if necessary and she then asked whether we had a gunsmith who could check out her personal handgun, which she said "might be broken. I can't tell". By the way, the firearm in question is a Colt Peacemaker in caliber .45 Long Colt... If you haven't figured it out, my theme this month is that the gun- grabbers have us on the run now. Things look much worse than they did a year ago. And things looked bad then, folks. Those of you who aren't active, GET ACTIVE! Those of you who are already active, GET MORE ACTIVE! NEVER SURRENDER YOUR GUNS! Brad Alpert (816) 753-3459
