The Green Bay Police Department operates a Marine Unit along the Fox
River for patrolling waterways, assisting disabled vessels, dive
operations, search and rescue. The Police Department patrols the
waterways with a 20' 2003 Pro-Line open-bow patrol/rescue boat and a 30'
2006 Zodiak cabin patrol/rescue boat. The Marine Unit is administered
by Lt. Kevin Warych and Lt. John Rousseau. All officers assigned to the
Marine Unit are fully trained and certified in boating safety as well as
 search and rescue.

During the boating season the patrol boats remain in the water and
ready for emergency search and rescue. The patrol boats are moored at
South Bay Marina, 101 Bay Beach Road. Southbay Marina donates the use of
their docks and facility to the Police Department. Southbay Marina has
for many years been a great partner with the police department and
strongly supports the Marine Unit in its effort. We thank them for their
 generosity.

The patrol boats are fully outfitted with all necessary safety,
rescue and dive equipment including fire extinguishers, life jackets,
throw rings, tow lines, first aid kits, marine radio, police radio,
electronics, GPS, radar, and emergency lighting.

The Marine Unit has responded to numerous calls for boater assistance
ranging from disabled boats to vessels sinking. Also, the Marine Unit
has responded to disturbances on the river, maintaining crime scenes,
boat crashes, intoxicated boaters, and vessels in need. Many citations
and warnings were written for a wide range of boating violations along
the Fox River.

State statutes require the Department of Natural Resources to provide
reimbursements up to 75% for equipment and patrol hours that local law
enforcement agencies spend providing law enforcement on Wisconsin rivers
and lakes. This includes the cost of the patrol boat, equipment, gas,
oil and maintaining the boat. This money comes from boat registration
fees and other recreational user fees.

The Marine Unit is proud to be building partnerships with the boating
community and businesses along the Fox River. Our goal is to maintain
the Fox River as a great, fun, safe place for all recreational boaters
to spend time with their family and friends. If you have any questions
about the Marine Unit, please contact Lt. Kevin Warych or Lt. John
Rousseau at 920 448-3208.
