The National Bank of Australia has admitted to being the
victim of fraud. Yeah, for them for taking the high road
and actually admitting it. A criminal defrauded the bank
by linking a stolen Eftpos credit card terminal back into
a merchant's system, in effect cracking the merchants link
to the bank, and then issued themselves credits, paid to a
variety of real bank accounts in various branches. The
bank has since closed the security hole.

The Courier & Press, a Evansville Indiana Newspaper, had
its online classified ads cracked. The cracker changed
the wording in more than a dozen ads in the online edition
of the ``Fast Trak'' automotive publication. The incident
has been reported to the FBI. This crack along with the
NYT crack last summer raises the question of just how much
you can trust online news, including HNN.

If you have subscribed to a email list known as The Daily
Joke then you have unwittingly allowed your email address
to be read by anyone. By improperly configuring their web
server and by storing the subscriber list on the same
machine as the web server The Daily Joke has left the
personal information of its subscribers open to the world.

NetBus 2.0 Pro was released last Friday as a commercial
tool. This new version is shareware and has a registration
fee of $12. Virus makers are now removing the software
from their lists of detectable items since they now
consider the program to be commercial. This article also
mentions the impending release of BO2K. A smaller more
stealthy version of Back Orifice.

HWA hax0r news #7 has been released. This issue has lots
of good articles and various advisories. (Ed Note: One
article mentions that HNN was cracked. We have had
various problems with our server lately and these will
most likly continue as we tweak our server making our
site unreachable at times. We have not however, been
cracked. If and when we do get cracked you will hear
about it here first. That is not something we would keep
secret. Full disclosure goes both
ways.)

Last month saw the start of a French group called "Hacker
Emergency Response Team" or HERT. HNN has received an
email that claims HERT stole the name from someone else
and that the real HERT "HERT Emergency Response Team" has
been operating underground since mid 1989. We have also
received a reply from the new group that has been accused
of stealing the name. We are presenting both emails here
in their entirety. Read them and make up your own mind.
