Ulterior Motives - New in Buffer Overflow

contributed by Whoever
Whoever returns with an article about bad journalism especially as it relates to the sensationalism and just downright wrong 'facts' that are reported about hackers these days.

Ulterior Motives

  NFR BackOfficer Friendly

contributed by Anonymous
NFR announced today the release of BackOfficer Friendly 1.0, a desktop intrusion and scan detection server that watches for BackOrifice attacks and other types of scans. Using spoofing server technology, BackOfficer Friendly responds to Back Orifice and other possibly unwanted requests with false answers that look like they were created by the hacker tool. At the same time, BackOfficer Friendly alerts you and records information about the source of the attempt and the operations they attempted to perform. (Whoa, this is scary stuff. BO users better be careful.)

  Swatch Abandons Ham SPAM

contributed by Code Kid
Swatch a Swiss watchmaker, has abandoned plans to to broadcast advertising on a ham radio frequency. The broadcast would have been in direct violation of international treaty. Due to the overwhelming number of complaints received by the company it has withdrawn its plans to broadcast the messages. (We are glad that Swatch has come to its sense but this whole thing sounds like such a marketing ploy.)

Bill Cheek Makes the News, Finally

contributed by Silicosis
Two weeks after radio enthusiast and internet activist was arrested we finnally find an article in the mainstream media covering this tragedy.

San Diego Reader Online

Why more people are not concerned about the implications of this arrest is beyond us. We point you again to the article written by Brian Oblivion and posted last week in the Buffer Overflow Section.

  Civilians Launch Cyber Attacks

contributed by Hawk
Are we officially at War? Should civilians be launching their own cyber attacks? Fox News examines these questions. While they sensationalize it a little and get a few of the facts wrong (LoU declared war four months ago, not years) this article does raise some interesting questions.

We have added The Security Search Engine to the search page. A new con has been added to the cons page. Some items have been added to the HNN Store and many thanks to p0lix for helping us purge the Affiliates Page of old links.

Once again we feel that a disclaimer must be posted. Way down here at the bottom of the page is the place for unconfirmed reports, rumors, things a little bird told us. Things we do not have time to check out and verify. This includes the listings of cracked web pages. While we do our best to verify everything before we put it online stuff that resides below the "Rumors From the Underground" banner should be treated as suspect and unverified. So if your site is listed below and it was not cracked we apologize.

Innerpulse Cracked?
There seems to be a lot of confusion as to what has happened to Innerpulse.com, a hacker news site that takes a more humorous approach than HNN. Some have said that they have been cracked, other think they have been bought out. Who knows. HNN has been unable to contact the operators of either site. Your guess is as good as ours.
