This weekend, a UK man decided to test the security of the site through
which he conducted his personal banking transactions. What he found was far
worse than he expected. With what he describes as simple attacks, he was
able to obtain the access log of his bank through Fiserv, the software
company that runs his bank's operation and many others. Once he was through
the door, the man was able to access bank account information across
America.

Tired of what they perceive to be blatant privacy violations, The Privacy
Foundation has issued a privacy advisory demanding Digital Convergence,
maker of :CueCat, alter their tracking methods. The advisory warns that the
device has the ability to track every bar code a user scans, leaving the
potential for future development of individual user profiles wide open.
Digital Convergence vigorously denies that the tool is or every will be used
for this purpose.

Although it has taken almost three years to draft, the Council of Europe may
be close to a final version of what they hope will be the world's first
international cybercrime treaty. In addition to the U.S., who as a
non-member holds an official "observer's role," the Council plans to invite
several other countries to review and sign the final version of the pact as
early as December. Skepticism runs rampant as the treaty increases the
potential threat to privacy on a global scale.

Jonathan James aka c0mrade, the teenager who recently pleaded guilty to
infiltrating both the Pentagon and NASA, has revealed that he also gained
access to BellSouth, the Miami-Dade school system and several other computer
systems. Apparently his father was the first to reveal his son's identity
for a newspaper article while James himself sought out an interview with the
Miami Herald. Acting every bit like the teenager he is, James discussed the
exploits at length as well as his reasoning behind them.
