USA Today is claiming that 30,000 viruses will be launched over New
Year's weekend. (Just where the hell did they get that number?
30,000? Damn talk about FUD, this article is full of it.)

Here is another Y2K fear mongering story. This one claims a few dozen
viruses with Y2K trigger dates have already been discovered.
(I guess since everyone is playing down the Y2K computer problem
itself the media needed something else as equally frightening to report
on.)

The SANS Institute is looking for help from network administrators to
assist them in avoiding network attacks as the New Year arrives. SANS
hopes that administrators around the world will report suspicious
activity to them at intrusion@sans.org. SANS has created a real time
notification system including a web page and email list.

A previous employee of AOL was sentenced to one year in jail and banned
from using a home computer for five years after he pleaded guilty to
computer tampering at AOL. AOL would not elaborate on how access was
gained or what effect that access may have had. AOL claimed that the
intrusion caused damages worth $50,000.

A Singaporean court has handed down five month jail sentence for
defacing the Television Corporation of Singapore's Web site. The
maximum penalty for a first time offender could have been three years
in jail and a $5,880 fine.

Ramsey Electronics Raided?
The Web pages of Ramsey Electronics claim that a recent 'US Federal
Government action' has forced them to stop selling wireless hobby and
educational kits. Kits such as FM transmitters or their $6 wireless
microphone kit. The rumor is that Ramsey and other electronic
distributors, possibly including giants such as Tandy, where actually
raided by the FBI and forced to stop selling these perfectly legal
devices. If anyone has further confirmable information we would like to
hear it.
