  • Nationwide Worldwide demonstrations are being planned for Friday, June 4 in front of federal courthouses and U.S. embassies beginning at 2 pm to protest the unjust treatment of Kevin Mitnick.

Since February 15, 1995, Mitnick has been held in a pre-trial facility with no bail hearing for possession of software allegedly worth millions of dollars. But the companies asserting this have never proven these claims nor have they reported these "losses" to their stockholders, as is required by law. Computer and legal experts generally agree that it's very unlikely there really was any real damage and that the high numbers assume every file and its associated research were wiped from existence. In actuality, no such damage was ever reported. Yet, Mitnick remained imprisoned as if this was what happened.

Mitnick recently pleaded guilty to a reduced amount of charges - with a federal conviction rate of 95%, this really wasn't a choice. Had he been found guilty at a trial, he could have gone to prison for ten more years which, the way this case has been handled, was not inconceivable. But even if Kevin were guilty of everything he was charged with, the fact remains that there was no documented damage, no evidence of malicious activity, and nothing to suggest that Mitnick profited in any way by reading the software he is accused of accessing. This is a case of corporate vengeance, aided and abetted by a federal government seeking to intimidate hackers.

We think Kevin Mitnick's suffering has gone on way too long. It's clear that the federal prosecutors feel otherwise, as they want to keep him imprisoned for yet another year and then add another three years of "supervised release" which forbid Kevin from even talking about computers.

Please help us get the message to the federal government that enough is enough. When Kevin is sentenced in June, the judge will have the power to recommend that he be released to a halfway house immediately. While it's not true freedom, it's a step in the right direction. This is the culmination of the "Free Kevin" movement - your participation will help send the message that this kind of inhumane treatment will not be tolerated in silence.

    What to Expect

These are going to be peaceful and informational demonstrations where we hope to reach people passing by as well as those people who play a part, directly or indirectly, in the federal system. If you've never been to something like this before, there is nothing to worry about. We will not be doing anything illegal and we expect most people to be receptive to our message. If you're interested in participating - spreading the word, making signs, etc. - your local 2600 meeting is the place to get together with others to make this happen. E-mail us at june4@2600.com if you have any questions.

    How To Organize

If your city is not on our list and you still want to participate, you can! Just print out the NEW demonstration flyer, make copies, and hand them out outside your federal courthouse at 2 pm on Friday, June 4. If you live in a place that doesn't have a federal courthouse, go to a local courthouse and, if you're not near one of those, just hand out the flyers wherever people congregate in your area. You'll be surprised how interested and well-informed some of them are. We suggest being as familiar as you can with the Mitnick case so you can answer any question a fellow participant or passerby may have. Check www.freekevin.com for the latest info.
