The Game Boy having been the portable gaming system of choice for kids and adults alike for 11 years it's inevitable that there will be some questionable games produced for it but could it be used for malicious purposes? You bet. With the vast amount of knowledge available on the net it was inevitable that people would start making programs that can be used for illegal and malicious purposes.
A program for using a Game Boy, Game Boy Pocket, or Game Boy Color as a portable phone phreaking tool has been available for some time from a Game Boy development team called TeamKNOx. The program titled PhreakBoy can be used to make free calls from pay phones, help in cracking the password for answering machines and includes a built in phone dialer. I know what your thinking yippee skippie most of those things can be done with a descent digital recorder but this one has a fancy GUI (graphical user interface) that anyone could understand.
If you keep track of the palm computing scene you may recall a story awhile back about the ability of the palm pilot to catch the IR signal from someone's automatic car door opener/unlocker. Well guess what the new Game Boy Color has....yep that's right a IR port. There are 3 or so programs already made by various Game Boy programers including a very nice looking one (called Learning RemoteCon)by the aforementioned TeamKNOx that reads an IR signal and stores it so it can be played again but there are a few other ones downloadable from dextrose. So that same malicious use of the palm pilot is again possible with the Game Boy Color.
I hear you say "but how do you get these programs of the internet and onto an actual Game Boy(Color)?". That's were devices like Bung Enterprises. GB Xchanger come in. What this device does is takes a Game Boy ROM and writes it to one of the Bung cards that can go into the Game Boy to play games off the internet or these programs. Nintendo tried to stop the production of these units because they (allegedly) promote piracy but they lost the court battle.
