What Is Twiddle?

Twiddle is a application that allows you to change database attributes. The unregistered version allows you to change the backup/HotSync bit, while the full version allows you to change the beam inhibit and Invisible bits as well.

What are the requirements to run Twiddle?

Twiddle requires a Palm Computing Platform device running OS version 2.0 or greater. This should cover any Palm out there with the exceptions of Pilot 1000 and 5000's that have not been upgraded. To effectively use the beam inhibit bit, PalmOS version 3.0 or greater is required. The invisibility bit requires PalmOS 3.2 or greater. Handspring Visor's also support the invisibility bit, even though the OS is only version 3.1.

How Do I Use Twiddle?

Twiddle has a very easy to use interface. The database names appear in the left hand column, and the database attributes are in the right columns. For more information, online help is available by clicking in the 'i' icon in the window header.

Are there any known issues with Twiddle?

Under OS 3.5, anytime an attribute on a application is changed, Launcher will 'forget' the category the application was in, and place it in the Unfiled category. This appears to be a bug in the 3.5 Launcher, but more investigation will be done to be sure.

How much does Twiddle cost?

Twelve dollars and fifty cents, US currency. Registrations are done at www.palmgear.com. You may also place phone orders at (817) 461-3480 or fax orders at (817) 461-3482. PalmGear will send you a registered copy of the program upon receipt of payment.

So who are you, anyway?

By day, I'm a Unix developer at medium sized company. At night, I can usually be found hacking on Palm, MacOS, or Linux programs. This is my first PalmOS program, and hopefully, it won't be the last. I plan to do some more utilities and some games in the future. If you have any ideas, suggestions, bug reports, questions, or just want to talk programming, you can email me at munsied@home.com.

Special Thanks

Chris Olson - Responsible for the icons used in Twiddle. Also acted as a beta tester and answered some technical questions along the way.

The GIMP (www.gimp.org) - For the Twiddle graphic above. If you haven't used The GIMP before, and you are looking for a way to get great results with minimal time, you really need to try it out. And because it's open-source, you won't have to take out a second mortgage on the house to try it.

And finally, my wife Amanda, and my two sons, Simeon and Devan - for allowing me to take weekend time (and some late nights in between) to work on this. Thanks again.
