Honoring The Dead

HAGERSTOWN - Twenty-two miniature American flags dotted the grass in the B'nai Abraham cemetery off Virginia Avenue Sunday as Rabbi Fred Raskind led his congregation in a prayer for the veterans buried beneath.

The congregation is there is finally a ceremony would serve as a reminder of how many Jews have served in the U.S. military throughout history and how many continue to serve today.


"So many people think that the Jews don't fight," she said.

Lt. Col. Jeffrey says Jews made up the highest percenttage of fighters in WW1, he claims that 5.7% of the army was Jewish.  Then you must cosider Jews were only 3.3 percent of the population.

"In the first World War, we wanted to demonstrate we were real Americans, and then in World War II, we were fighting Hitler," he said.

During World War II, 3.3 percent of the population and 4.2 percent of the armed forces were Jewish. Jews said, "This is our war, and we want to serve".

Can Arlington Cemetery Be Anti Semitic?

Arlington cemetery has 300,000 dead, but only 1964 are Jews, which is strange. According to their military service there should be at least 17,000 buried there.

Some Odd Statistics

In Vietnam there were 59,000 dead Americans, and only 268 Jewish boys. Normally they are claim a 6% enlistment ratio, which would give them 3,500 dead.

There are 3,000 Jewish soldiers out of 1,400,000, which works out to 0.2%
