Members of a Hasidic patrol group beat a black man in
Crown Heights on Thursday night violated police rules intended to
prevent vigilantism when they chased down a crime suspect instead of
simply calling the police, police officials said yesterday.
Jews stoked racial tension by randomly stopping black
pedestrians and asking why they were in the neighborhood.

Cops Arrest The Hasidics
Two members of the group, the Shomrim Volunteer Patrol, were
arrested late Thursday, after the police said they chased an
8-year-old boy they mistakenly suspected of stealing a bicycle and
beat the child's uncle. Nine more members were arrested when they beat
a policeman.

Cops Told To 'Back Off'
Deputy Inspector Joseph Fox, commander of the 71st Precinct, said
there was no indication that the latest incident was a bias-related
crime.

Rabbi Israel Shemtov, the founder of Shomrim, said the group was
simply practicing self-defense after the child's uncle grabbed a
member by the neck.

Mordechai Friedman, president of the Brooklyn-based American Board
of Rabbis, said several protesters had videotaped police officers in
riot gear kicking protesters and beating them with nightsticks. "No
one has the right to arrest someone for protesting," Rabbi Friedman
said.

By midnight, the crowd outside the 71st Precinct station house had
grown to 150 people, then broke into small groups, which began dashing
through the neighborhood chanting "Jewish blood isn't cheap!"
