The other Goldstein Jewish Terrorist
by Matt Giwer, © 2002 [August]
He is a modest thing here in Tampa and in Florida and barely worth national coverage, the other Goldstein. The first Goldstein Jewish terrorist struck in a mosque in Hebron in occupied Palestine. He murdered 17 people before he was killed. He is honored as a saint by hundreds of thousands in Israel as a national hero for his actions.

The other Goldstein Jewish terrorist worked as a podiatrist in the Tampa Bay area of Florida, USA. His wife turned him in. I have not noticed his wife mentioned on the national news. He had an arsenal exceeding that of David Koresh of Waco fame. He had bombs ready-to-use which Koresh never had.

The media refuses to call him a terrorist even in Tampa. On the national scene the media refuses to call him a terrorist or mention that he is Jewish. No coverage outside of Tampa has even mentioned his reference to Islamics as "rags."

The first observation is if he had succeeded he would be honored in Israel by hundreds of thousands as was the first Goldstein. Disgusting as it is, that is Israel.

The second observation is no lone gunman can use more than one handgun and one rifle at a time. As he had so many rifles there were other people to us them. The local news reports the minimum cost of the weapons in his arsenal at over $1000 and the most expensive a little under $10,000 and more than fifty of them.

There were ready-to-use bombs with timers which elicited the admiration of the police and BATF for their quality. It is conceivable a lone bomber could do something "cool" the first time around in the way of making a bomb. The PhD mathematician Unibomber took over a decade to go from crude to sophisticated in his bombs. This man was sophisticated the first time without training or he was trained. The bombs were ready-to-use therefore an attack was imminent.

Any rational person considers this a conspiracy as he named at least two other people on papers found in his home. This Goldstein is being given psychiatric evaluations instead of being shipped off to Guantanamo for questioning as an enemy combatant. A war on any American is a war on all Americans. There is no search for his named fellow conspirators.

His attorney made the pitch that he was on many psychotropic prescription drugs as an excuse. Were the drugs secondary cause or were they primary to control his homicidal urges? The prescribing physician cannot be forced to testify nor do professional ethic permit him to testify. This is a classic defense of Jews guilty of anti-semitic acts that they must suffer from mental illness as no Jew could do such a thing, circular to say the least.

The first Goldstein was an ex-American from Brooklyn choosing to live as a criminal in the occupied West Bank of Palestine to commit his murderers and become a saint in the eyes of millions of Israelis. This Goldstein is an un-American choosing to pursue his loyalty to Israel's hatred of Muslims on American soil. It is very un-American.

Not one American citizen of Mideast origin or of the Islamic faith has been accused of anything like this. Not one. This Goldstein is the second of the Judaic Faith found planning such atrocities since 9/11. The first was Irving Ruben, president of the Jewish Defense League, with similar bombing plans. Any rational person holds Jews a greater threat to Americans than Muslims by the available evidence.

Goldstein's plan was the same as Rubin's plan. Both were to bomb Islamic sites in the US. Both intended terrorist acts. Both are Jewish. As American citizens go we have 2 for 0 in favor of Jewish terrorists over Islamic terrorists in the US.

As Islam says it is a religion of peace. The American experience supports that. The Jewish religion is that of a vengeful tribal god. The American experience supports that also.

Podiatrist Pleads Guilty in Plot to Attack Islamic Center
By Mitch Stacy
Associated Press writer
Low Bandwidth High Bandwidth
TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - A podiatrist admitted in federal court Thursday that he planned to bomb a Pinellas County Islamic center to avenge the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.
Robert Jay Goldstein, 38, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to violate civil rights, attempting to damage religious property, and possession of the unlicensed bombs police found in his Seminole town house during a search in August.

"Today's guilty plea is a reminder that acts of violence targeted at individuals because of their race, religion or national origin will not be permitted in the United States," said Ralph F. Boyd Jr., assistant U.S. attorney general for civil rights. "The Department of Justice is committed to fighting hate and intolerance."

If the judge accepts the plea arrangement, Goldstein faces between 12 1/2 and 15 years in prison when sentenced later. Prosecutors agreed to a lesser sentence than the 21 years he could have gotten if convicted at trial, because he admitted responsibility and saved the government the time and expense of trying him.

The guilty plea came about five weeks after Goldstein's estranged wife, Kristi, pleaded guilty to illegally possessing five unlicensed bombs and agreed to testify against him. A friend, dentist Michael Hardee, had also pleaded guilty earlier to being the attack's would-be getaway driver and was cooperating with investigators.

Kristi Goldstein likely will face about three years in prison when she is sentenced June 13, prosecutors have said. Hardee's sentencing is scheduled for May 1.

Goldstein's attorney, Myles H. Malman, said Goldstein suffers from severe mental illness, and part of the agreement involves him being sent to a federal institution where he can get treatment.

"This plea will help Dr. Goldstein put behind him an extremely tumultuous, troubling and stressful time in his life," Malman said.

Malman said Goldstein planned to bomb the Islamic Society of Pinellas County mosque and cultural center to destroy the building, not to kill people.

A "mission template" found in Goldstein's home outlined plans to shoot Muslims with high-powered weapons during the attack, but Malman said that was "a fantasy and is a product of the extreme mental illness from which Dr. Goldstein suffers."

Goldstein, who ran a podiatry office in Seminole for a decade, told U.S. Magistrate Mark A. Pizzo that he requires a daily combination of five anti-depressant and anti-psychotic drugs.

When asked by Pizzo to enter a plea to each of the three counts, the stocky Goldstein, dressed in an orange Hillsborough County jail jumpsuit, replied: "Guilty, your honor."

Goldstein was arrested in August after Pinellas County sheriff's deputies, responding to a domestic violence report, found an arsenal of weapons and bombs in his town house. They also found a detailed plan that called for planting homemade bombs and using powerful automatic weapons to destroy the Islamic Society of Pinellas County's mosque and cultural center.

Authorities removed more than 30 explosive devices from the house, including light-armor rockets, hand grenades and a 5-gallon gasoline bomb. Besides unlicensed bombs and bomb-making materials, they also found 63 licensed weapons and silencers, including .50-caliber machine guns and sniper rifles. Goldstein also had a typed list of 50 Muslim worship centers in the Tampa Bay area.

Ahmed Bedier, a spokesman for the Council for American-Islamic Relations who worships at the Pinellas County mosque, said he was disappointed that the plea agreement allows Goldstein to serve less prison time than many Muslims feel he deserves.

"I'm happy he's behind bars and will serve some time, but it's nowhere enough for the damage he intended to do," Bedier said. "If it was a Muslim in his place, he would probably never come out of jail. This was attempted murder."

Bedier contended that Goldstein should have been prosecuted as a terrorist, but prosecutors said the facts of the case didn't warrant such a charge.

Hardee told federal agents that Robert and Kristi Goldstein shared a love of shooting, building bombs and watching them blow up. They often made explosives together in their kitchen, and Kristi heard her husband talk repeatedly about blowing up the Muslim center, Hardee said.

Hardee also said that besides seeking revenge for the Sept. 11 attacks, Goldstein - who is Jewish - wanted to make a statement for "his people" because of the ongoing hostilities in the Middle East.

"We're very pleased that this plot was foiled - nobody got hurt," U.S. Attorney's Office spokesman Steve Cole said.

Man pleads guilty to bomb plot
The podiatrist whose home held an arsenal faces 12 1/2 to 15 years.

By GRAHAM BRINK, Times Staff Writer

© St. Petersburg Times, published April 4, 2003

TAMPA -- Seminole podiatrist Robert J. Goldstein pleaded guilty in federal court Thursday to plotting to blow up a local mosque.

Goldstein faces 121/2 to 15 years in prison, according to a plea agreement, about two years less than he likely would face if convicted of the same charges at trial.

Officials with the U.S. Attorney's Office expressed relief that the plot was foiled and the main player will go to prison. But the plea agreement left a local Muslim group with mixed feelings.

If Goldstein were a Muslim who plotted to blow up buildings, he would have faced a much harsher sentence, said Ahmed Bedier, communications director of the Florida office of the Council of American-Islamic Relations.

"This appears to be a double standard," he said. "This sentence also sends a message that it just might be worth the risk to attack American Muslims."

Goldstein, 38, pleaded guilty to three charges: conspiracy to violate civil rights, attempting to damage religious property and possession of unregistered firearms. No sentencing date was set.

The plea agreement calls for the judge to recommend Goldstein serve his time at the Federal Medical Center in Butner, N.C., a facility prosecutors described as a prison with more advanced mental health care.

Goldstein, who told the judge on Thursday that he was on several prescription drugs, including the antidepressant Prozac, appeared alert and able to follow the proceedings. His mental health has been an issue throughout the case.

In an unusual move, the prosecution and defense agreed that if the judge or probation department decides a sentence of more than 15 years is warranted, Goldstein will be allowed to withdraw his plea and go to trial.

In the majority of plea agreements, the defendant is bound to the judge's sentencing decision.

"We are satisfied with the plea agreement," said U.S. Attorney's Office spokesman Steve Cole.

The case began Aug. 22 when Goldstein's wife called authorities after the couple fought. Kristi Goldstein told deputies her husband had threatened to kill her. Investigators discovered an arsenal in the home at 9209 Seminole Blvd., including two light antiarmor rockets, handguns, a 50-caliber rifle and homemade bombs.

Plot

They also found a typed list of 50 Islamic worship centers in the Tampa Bay area and Florida, court records state. Attached to the list were three pages that included a schematic drawing of a center and instructions on what to wear and how to carry out an attack.

Goldstein's target was the Islamic Society of Pinellas County, a short distance from his house, prosecutors said.

Goldstein -- who is Jewish -- wanted to make a statement for "his people" against Arabs and Muslims in light of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, according to court documents.

"OBJECTIVE: Kill all 'rags' at this Islamic Education Center -- ZERO residual presence -- maximum effect," the plan read.

Further investigation led to the arrest of accomplice Michael Hardee, a Temple Terrace dentist. He pleaded guilty in October to conspiring with Goldstein and agreed to cooperate with authorities. He is scheduled for sentencing in May.

In October, Kristi Goldstein was arrested on a charge of illegally possessing destructive devices. She pleaded guilty in February and also agreed to cooperate with the investigation. She will likely receive about three years in prison when she is sentenced in June.

Federal agents also arrested Dunedin resident Samuel "Val" Shannahan on charges that he had illegally given two machine guns and other firearm accessories to Goldstein. He faces trial in May.

Although the plea agreement refers to Goldstein speaking with "another" person who wasn't named, prosecutor Colleen Murphy-Davis said her office has charged everyone who could be charged. "There is no other person out there who we know of at this time that we can charge," she said.

Altaf Ali, CAIR's executive director in Florida, said he had hoped the prosecutors would treat the case with "more seriousness," given the potential damage posed by the plot.

"We wanted them to treat this as a domestic terrorist cell," Ali said. "These are not tough enough sentences for what they planned to carry out."

Robert Goldstein's attorney, Myles Malman, said Goldstein's plan was to destroy property, not kill people. Goldstein suffers from "severe" obsessive-compulsive disorder and depression, Malman said, but takes full responsibility for his actions. Twelve to 15 years in prison is a "very significant sentence," he said.

"This plea will help Dr. Goldstein put behind him an extremely tumultuous, troubling and stressful time in his life," Malman said.

David Irving comments:

SOME Jews complained the doctor in this case was identified as being "a Jew." CNN pointed out that such identification went toward establishing motive and, hence, important in understanding the why of it.
I disagree. As one of my editors on the book Nuremberg, the Last Battle commented, "if a man's name is Sam Rosenman and he is Roosevelt's lawyer, the description Jewish is superfluous." He was right, and the word was edited out.

Police arrest wife of doctor accused in bomb plot

TAMPA, Florida (AP) -- The wife of a podiatrist accused of plotting to bomb Islamic centers was charged Thursday with being his accomplice.

Kristi Goldstein, 28, shared Dr. Robert Goldstein's fascination with building bombs and knew about his plans to blow up an Islamic education and cultural center in St. Petersburg, federal prosecutors said. She has denied knowledge of the plot.

Kristi Goldstein was charged with illegal possession of destructive devices a day after another alleged accomplice, Dr. Michael Hardee, agreed to plead guilty to federal charges and cooperate with prosecutors.

Kristi Goldstein was released on $100,000 bond.

Court documents released Thursday allege she stood by as her husband filled their house with weapons and explosives and talked for at least four months about bombing Muslims.
"Kristi was almost always around, knew about everything, and never questioned anything," Hardee said in his statement to federal agents.
Hardee accomplice

Hardee -- a dentist described in court documents as a friend of the Goldsteins and fellow gun enthusiast -- told federal agents that he agreed to drive Robert Goldstein to the Islamic Education/Cultural Center in St. Petersburg and circle the block while Goldstein planted explosives.

Robert Goldstein, who is Jewish, wanted to bomb the center "to retaliate against Arabs and Muslims for both the events of September 11th, as well as the ongoing hostilities in the Middle East between Arabs and Jews," Hardee said in court documents.

Kristi Goldstein has denied knowing about the plans, and her attorney, Frank Louderback, noted in court Thursday that she fully cooperated with authorities in a search of the Seminole townhouse where the couple lived.

Authorities found 37 destructive devices and other explosives and components used in making bombs when they responded to a domestic disturbance call at the home August 22, court documents said.

They also found high-powered weapons registered to Robert Goldstein, three bulletproof vests, 25,000 rounds of ammunition and a typed list of 50 Islamic worship centers in the Tampa Bay area, documents said.

Louderback said Kristi Goldstein is seeking a divorce from her husband and has a restraining order against him and suggested Hardee implicated her "to cover up his own tracks."

Hardee's home telephone was not listed. A message left at his office was not immediately returned Thursday night.

Robert Goldstein, 37, is charged with possession of non-registered destructive devices and attempting to use an explosive to damage and destroy the Islamic centers. His attorney, Myles Malman, has described the plot as a fantasy game that he never planned to carry out.

He could face up to 30 years in prison if convicted of both charges.

Low-Key Treatment of Jewish Terrorists Rubin and Goldstein Shows Double Standard

By Delinda C. Hanley

It would have been easy to miss recent news reports of the arrest in Florida of Dr. Robert Goldstein and the violent death in a California prison of Irv Rubin, head of the Jewish Defense League (JDL). The low-key coverage was in sharp contrast to the screaming headlines announcing the arrest of Muslim or Arab “terrorists”—a fact that infuriates Muslim and Arab Americans, as well as any American wishing to be fully informed. Nor is this “merely” a matter of principle—had the two plots succeeded, scores, if not hundreds, of Muslim Americans, as well as a U.S. congressman, could have been killed or terrorized.

On Dec. 12, 2001, Irv Rubin and Earl Krugel were arrested in California and charged with plotting to blow up the King Fahd Mosque in Culver City, the offices of the Muslim Public Affairs Council, as well as that of Rep. Darrell Issa (R-CA), who is the son of Lebanese immigrants. An unnamed fellow JDL member, who had carried out previous crimes for the organization, informed authorities of the plot and wore a wiretap to gather evidence. The FBI was able to catch Rubin and Krugel red-handed, with weapons and bomb-making equipment, along with the tapes of the pair plotting to send a “wake-up call” to Arab Americans and to show that the JDL was “alive in a militant way.”

Tragically, Rubin, 57, will not face trial—nor may the evidence against him ever come to light. He reportedly slashed his throat with a prison-issue razor on Nov. 4, then jumped or fell over a prison walkway at a federal detention center, landing on a concrete floor 18 feet below. After emergency surgery Rubin was pronounced brain-dead the next day, finally dying on Nov. 13.

Rubin’s violent life ended as he led it—amid bloodshed, controversy and brief headlines. Some press reports seemed to actually glorify Rubin, who had been arrested more than 40 times, and headed the radical JDL from 1985 until his final arrest in 2001. Rabbi Tzvi Block told the Los Angeles Times, “His entire life was for the Jewish people. He was a Jewish hero, and it will be noted for time to come.”

Members of the JDL, founded in New York in 1968 by the late Rabbi Meir Kahane, pledge to use “all necessary means” to defend Jewish interests and have been linked to numerous violent—otherwise known as terrorist—attacks in the United States. The organization was tied to bombings of Soviet targets in the U.S. in retaliation for the treatment of Soviet Jews.

Rubin, who often claimed he was the victim of a U.S. government vendetta, was the mouth behind the bullhorn at demonstrations. From O.J. Simpson’s murder trial in L.A. to the opening of Disney World’s Holy Land Experience in Orlando, he could be counted on to hog the media spotlight. Far from being labeled a terrorist, however, he was more likely to be portrayed as a buffoon.

Nevertheless, Rubin was charged with soliciting murder when, during a 1978 press conference, he offered to pay $500 to anyone who killed or maimed a member of the American Nazi Party. In 1994 Rubin praised Baruch Goldstein’s massacre of 24 Palestinian worshippers praying in Hebron’s Ibrahimi mosque.

Authorities also investigated Rubin and the JDL in connection with the unsolved 1985 murder of Alex Odeh, West Coast regional director of the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee. Odeh was killed by a booby-trapped bomb when he opened the door of his Los Angeles office. Following the attack, Rubin said Odeh had gotten “exactly what he deserved.”

Arab Americans had hoped that, for his latest crime, Rubin at last might get what he deserved: 40 years to life in prison. They also hoped that during his trial, the taped evidence of him planning the 2001 attack also would prove that Rubin was responsible for Odeh’s murder. Those wiretaps purportedly included warnings that the bombings should strike buildings and not human targets—because they “still had not heard the end of the Alex Odeh incident.”

Rubin was awaiting transport from prison to a court hearing in preparation for his January 2003 trial when he had his untimely accident. Mark Werksman, a lawyer for Rubin’s co-defendant, Krugel, had anticipated a “watershed” hearing at which the defense would seek any evidence of prior FBI investigations of the JDL.

Rubin’s family and some of his supporters have said they do not believe that Rubin tried to kill himself. Shelley Rubin reported her husband “was not happy” in prison, but gave no indication that he intended to commit suicide. The father of two left no suicide note.

Supporters claim he was the victim of an assault. “I’m saying he was killed,” Bill Maniaci, retired police officer and Rubin’s successor as JDL leader, told the Los Angeles Times after the funeral. Why, skeptics wonder, didn’t prison cameras record Rubin’s suicide? Claiming a government conspiracy to silence him once and for all, Rubin’s supporters have called for an investigation. Others speak of enemies “inside” who might have tried to kill him—although authorities say there was no one within 15 feet of Rubin when he plunged over the railing.

The American public may never know how or why Rubin was killed, or whether or not he murdered Alex Odeh. Irv Rubin will probably just join the ranks of “mentally unbalanced” Jewish individuals who, like Baruch Goldstein, are never labeled “terrorists.”

Another mentally ill Jewish American, whom skimpy news reports described as a “podiatrist” rather than a “terrorist,” was Dr. Robert J. Goldstein, 37. Only by accident—when they were called to look into a domestic dispute on Aug. 23, 2002—did authorities discover the Tampa, FL doctor’s detailed three-page plan to blow up an Islamic Education/Cultural Center, along with a list of 50 other mosques.

Trip wires

Police coaxed Goldstein out of the house, took him into custody and then entered his home. They found it rigged with trip wires, surveillance cameras and enough explosive devices—including a 5-gallon gasoline bomb with a timer attached—to destroy the entire 200-unit townhouse development where he lived. Among Goldstein’s cache of weapons were hand grenades, mines, and 30 to 40 guns, including semi-automatic weapons, .50-caliber machine guns and sniper rifles. He had assembled more than 15 homemade bombs, with enough bits and pieces and “how to” books to make 30 to 40 more explosive devices.

Goldstein’s mission objective was to “kill all ‘rags’ at this Islamic Education Center—zero residual presence—maximum effect.” His wife and a friend Dr. Michael Hardee, a dentist, were charged as accomplices.

“If it was a Muslim who had possessed that same amount of ammunition,” said Altaf Ali, executive director of the state chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations in Davie, FL, “he would have been called a terrorist, mosques would have been investigated and there would have been a national response.”

Because the doctor was Jewish, however, there was little national media attention to Goldstein’s arrest, and virtually no follow-up.

Delinda C. Hanley is news editor of the Washington Report.

SEMINOLE, Florida (CNN) -- A Florida man arrested after police found more than 15 homemade explosive devices in his home allegedly drafted a detailed plan to blow up an Islamic educational center, according to court documents filed in the case Friday.

A search of Dr. Robert J. Goldstein's residence also turned up a list of about 50 Islamic worship centers in the Tampa-St. Petersburg area and other locations in Florida, according to a court affidavit. Goldstein is a podiatrist.

Goldstein, who was taken into custody after his wife called police Thursday night, has been charged with one count of possessing destructive devices and one count of attempting to damage and destroy buildings by means of explosive devices.

Attached to the criminal complaint against Goldstein was a three-page "mission template" for an attack on an unidentified "Islam education center," which included a map of the center showing where bombs would be placed.

Correspondent Charlie Belcher reports on an arsenal of weapons found in a Tampa home that police say were to be used against Muslims (August 23)

The document said the objective was to "Kill all 'rags' at this Islamic Education Center -- ZERO residual presence -- maximum effect."

Deputies from the Pinellas County Sheriff's Department were summoned to the Goldstein home Thursday night, after his wife, Kristi, called to report that he had threatened to kill her, according to the court affidavit. She authorized agents to search the premises, where they found more than 15 homemade bombs.

Goldstein surrendered to officers and was taken to a local hospital for psychiatric evaluation, the sheriff's department said. Friday afternoon, he made an initial appearance in U.S. District Court and was being held in federal custody, said Special Agent Carlos Baixaulia of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms.

In addition to the 15 and 20 explosive devices that were found, there were also enough bomb components in the home to to make 30 to 40 more devices, Baixaulia said.

Deputies also found books on how to make explosives and devices that could be used to explode bombs by remote control, along with homemade C-4 (a type of explosive), hand grenades and homemade military mines, the sheriff's department said.

Authorities also recovered 30 to 40 weapons, including semi-automatic weapons and a .50-caliber sniper rifle, the sheriff's department said.

Seminole is in the Tampa Bay area.
