What the hell happened to... the BBS? ------------------------------------------------------------------------ 1) What the hell are you guys / gals? A) Just a bunch of hackers who got together and started working on projects together. One of the projects turned out to be L0pht.com. There are remnants of different groups that make up L0pht such as RDT, cDc, RL, etc. We didn't start this thing off to make money. We did this, and still do, out of a love we have for technology and making it do things that it might not have originally been meant to. 2) You said 'guys / gals', do you have female members of the L0phT? A) The people that actually make up the L0phT changes from time to time. We have had female members in the past and present and plan to in the future. We want to stop the stereotypical thinking about what type of people make up 'hackers'. 3) What sort of projects are going on there? A) We have two 'groups' that make up L0pht: a hardware group and a software group. The hardware group works with wireless communications, packet radio, microwave links, and various telephony projects. The software group deals a lot with computer security of various OS's. However the type and scope of various projects vary widely as the interest of the individuals that make up the L0phT change often. Every member of the L0pht has specific interests and varying areas of expertise, which makes for a wide variety of projects. 4) Warez! Dude I heard you got filez-n-warez! I got to get me some! How? A) We have many of our files available to everyone via the World Wide Web. These include the Black Crawling Systems archive, the Whacked Mac Archives, and assorted others. You can get them by using your favorite web browser to connect to our web page. 5) I need help breaking into system xyz.com -- can you help? Will you break into xyz.com for me? I'll pay you! A) Thanks, but no thanks. We're not in this for the money, or the glory. We have heard some pretty outlandish sob stories that people have tried to lay on us in order to get us to do their dirty work for them. If we accepted all these offers not only would we be filthy rich, we would have no morals or self respect, and quite possibly be living in a cell with a mass-murderer named "Brutus". If you want a job done right you're really going to have to do it yourself. 6) I heard about L0pht {in .NET magazine, on the BBC, on Annaliza's 'Unauthorized Access' video, on IRC, in the LA Times, in Phrack, yatada yatada yatada} can I come visit the place? A) We used to have a very open door policy at our old location in Boston's South End, however, some people abused this. Thus, L0pht no longer has a physical-world open door policy. L0pht's net world policy will always be open door. 7) So what kind of hardware is L0pht.com running on these days? The l0pht.com box is a 266MHz DEC Alpha, with 40MB RAM, 2GB disk. 8) What operating system is L0pht running? A) Currently L0pht.com and www.l0pht.com are running OpenBSD. 9) Who do I contact in regards to problems with policies? A) If you have questions or problems with policies or operations then please send mail to root@L0pht.com. Some examples of legitimate questions are: Joe Blow at biteme.uunet.net keeps clobbering my connection... I got a mail message that screwed up my terminal and I had to drop my connection. [We'll probably laugh at this one but send it on in anyway] Examples of questions that will get the response of RTFM (Read The Fucking Manual): How do I use {pine, elm, bc, vi, emacs, etc., etc.} 10) What the hell happened to the BBS? A) The BBS is up and running EaglesBBS which is a descendant of the good old Pirates BBS. Telnet to bbs.l0pht.com and login: bbs Contact bb@l0pht.com with questions.
