Earlier this year I bought several pieces of expensive microwave absorbing foam; I found it helped slightly to reduce effects of what is apparently EM-pollution. I recently found that a single layer of aluminum works about as well.

If the aluminum sheet is layered on a piece of cardboard 12 to 18" square, and this square is held at arm's length a noticeable effect occurs when the square is slowly scanned along the horizon. As a certain point is occluded a subtle sensation of relaxation affects the face and especially eyes.

Taking this a step further, make a hole in the center of the square about a half inch in diameter. Repeat the above procedure except focus one eye through the hole. As the square is slowly scanned along the horizon level and a source passes into view (this can be in your house, so the 'view' will be a wall), the eye will experience a disagreeable sensation which causes it to blink.

A further refinement is to use a box instead of a sheet of cardboard. Layer aluminum over two opposing sides of the box. This time make a hole about a quarter inch in diameter in the aluminum, both sides, in alignment. There should also be a corresponding hole in the cardboard to allow 'sighting', which is just to mark off a local landmark for the next step.

Repeating the scanning technique above allows the source to be pinpointed to within a few degrees of compass bearing. By marking this bearing off on a map I have found a cell tower in almost every case so far. The match is very good. There are about two dozen sources I have identified this way. I have also learned to use the FCC database at wireless.fcc.gov/antenna to confirm tower locations without driving around so much.

I have reason to believe that this system does not work for everyone. But I would like others to hear of it so that some progress might be made in explaining it.

In buying the microwave absorbing foam I spent $200 for two 2 ft. squares of this stuff, and it was the least expensive variety. It did not work well enough to get a good night's sleep! It seems pretty clear that the intensity of the source was notched up too. So things may even have gotten worse.

The important points are - 1 - it showed me that the experiences were due to EM radiation, and 2 - since it did not work very well at any time it seems the frequency of the EM is mostly below that where the material starts to block, about 1 gigahertz.

As I said, a single layer of cheap aluminum foil (or better, a Coleman 'emergency blanket', which is plastic coated aluminum) works about as well - it still does not work that great!.

So what's the point? That by constructing the simple scanner device it is possible to find the source of the emission. That at least is a big step. I wish I could offer a better shielding idea. There are some at www.lessemf.com, but I can't say how any of them work. I would recommend trying that before going to www.eccosorb.com, where I got the microwave absorbing foam.
