Nasty Girl

    Prominent citizens in your town
Taught to respect them all your life
Patted you on the head as a child and
Told you to make something of your mind

Now you're all grown and curious
Looking to share your skills with the world
And you start to explore and discover
    Even when you find things
                                               are not so pretty

They always told you to tell the truth
    And so you purposefully announce
    Undeniable, unfortunate truth:
Powerful people, heinous crimes, years of lies.

The world turns round on blackmail
Subtle threats, secret surveillance, winks and nods
Sympathy for the victims makes you naive
Threats of violence: criminal or state?

    Now you're the target
    About to learn the lesson:
    The emperor has lovely clothes
    And everybody knows it

    And even beyond the violence
    The wickedest weapon of all:
    The blunt force trauma
             of stupidity
    That everyone accepts
    Because it's backed by power

Thank goodness for the nasty girl.
