I can talk about traveling extensively throughout Australia, parts of England and Wales, tourist destinations of Europe, the United States from New York to L A, via the Southern States, and cruising the South Sea Islands.
Here are some little hints I've learned along the way.
I'm not a regular traveller because I can't afford to and living in a country as isolated as Australia you have to do as much as you can when you do go. Often the trips cover a lot of territory costing more than the annual holiday. So I don't go every year and I don't shop. I figure for the little bit extra I pay in duty here I save on places and things to see when I'm away. I don't eat out and I walk almost everywhere within ten miles of where I stay, that way you get to see far more than you do from the windows of a bus or taxi.
I buy little souvineers that depict where I've been like badges, shot glasses, fridge magnets or toothpick holders. They remind me of where I've been and they're light in the luggage. I stay first class and tour with experienced guides in countries where I don't speak the language. In countries where I can be understood I don't mind camping out if the weather isn't too cold and going my own way. I can drive on the wrong side of the road but I prefer to have a good navigator in places I'm not familiar with.
Favourite country? It's hard to say because every one has it's own charm. I enjoy the challenge of exploring cultures far removed from my own but if I had to live anywhere other than Australia it would have to be the United States. I love the Americans and identify with them more than any other people.
I travel alone. That way I cover twice as much territory, not having to satisfy the whims of any one else. Of course when that soul mate with like mind comes along I can't think of anything in this world I'd rather do than stand overlooking an awesome view and be able to turn to him and say, "Isn't it wonderful." That's the only thing that makes everything you encounter twice as exciting.
