The Philadelphia Experiment
Edited by Branton
Certain individuals who have allegedly encountered the occupants of UFO's have stated that some of the 'occupants' claim that they are not 'trapped in time' like we on earth are. Is 'time' a substance that can be altered? Even though most physicists agree that reverse-time flow is quite impossible due to the 'paradox' factor--as well as the fact that two separate 'realities' cannot exist within the same space--and that time like a river must flow ever forward, is it possible that the RATE of that forward flow might change depending on the observers position in the Universe or in the Electromagnetic Spectrum? These entities who have been encountered by certain individuals claim that they have the ability to alter the forward flow of time by speeding it up, slowing it down or even stopping it altogether. For instance, a civilization capable of near-light-speed travel could also theoretically distort time using such a method, according to Einsteinean theory. There have already been experiments that have taken place on earth however, which if true tend to support the idea that a powerful electromagnetic energy field might distort the forward flow of 'time', as well as the lateral flow of 'space'.
In his book, 'WITHOUT A TRACE', Charles Berlitz makes some interesting comparisons between the time/space phenomena observed in the Bermuda Triangle region (as well as other 'triangles' such as the 'Devil's Triangle' off the coast of Japan, the Great Lakes 'triangle' zone, etc.) and the so-called 'Philadelphia Experiment.' Berlitz stated that:
"...In mid-October 1943, the United States Navy allegedly conducted a series of tests at the Philadelphia Navy Yard, at Norfolk-Newport News, Virginia, and at sea. Although a certain amount has been written about the 'Philadelphia Experiment' in books, magazines, and both domestic and foreign newspapers, basic sources of information remain clouded. Witnesses have died, other witnesses or informed personnel refuse to be quoted, and at least one researcher has (supposedly - Branton) committed suicide. Even its Navy code name is apparently unknown; if it were established, researchers would be able to consult the basic documents, if they still exist or are not too highly classified. Nevertheless, persistent reports and comment about the Philadelphia Experiment follow the same pattern: an attempt to make a Navy ship 'disappear' in a 1943 experiment was eminently successful, except for the deleterious effect on the crew.
"The connection between the Philadelphia Experiment and the Bermuda Triangle stems from the reported use of an artificially induced magnetic field to cause the temporary disappearance of a destroyer and crew. Its advantage to naval warfare lies, of course, in the camouflage possibilities implied in rendering warships invisible. But its importance to scientific theory is more profound: men and material were temporarily projected into another dimension.
"Dr. Manson Valentine, a friend and colleague of Dr,. Morris Jessup, the prominent astronomer and selenographer who became involved with the Office of Naval Research after the experiment reportedly occurred, has outlined some of the more striking incidents of the Philadelphia Experiment as he remembers them through his conversations and correspondence with Dr. Jessup:
"'According to Jessup the purpose (of the Philadelphia Experiment) was to test out the effect of a strong magnetic field on a manned surface craft. This was to be accomplished by means of magnetic generators (degaussers). Both pulsating and non-pulsating generators were operated to create a tremendous magnetic field on and around the docked vessel. The results were as astonishing as they were important, although with unfortunate after effects on the crew. When the experiment first began to take effect, a hazy green light became evident, something like reports we have from survivors of incidents in the Triangle who tell of a luminous greenish mist. Soon the whole ship was full of this green haze and the craft, together with its personnel, began disappearing from sight of those on the dock until only its water outline was visible. The destroyer was subsequently reported to have appeared and disappeared at Norfolk, Virginia, which may have been the result of a trial invisibility run, involving a related time-warp phenomena.
"'It was reported...that the experiment was successful at sea with an effective invisibility of spheroid shape extending 100 yards from each beam, which showed the impression made by the ship in the water, but not the ship itself [One source claimed that such 'displacements' of water have also been seen in the Bermuda Triangle. Possibly derelict ships lost in a similar EM field? - Branton]. As the force field intensified some crew members began disappearing and had to be recovered by tactual (physical) contact and restored to visibility by a sort of laying on of hands technique...full recovery could be a serious problem. It was rumored that many were hospitalized, some died, others were adversely affected mentally.
"'Psychic ability (i.e. sensitivity to paraphysial realities, whether for good or evil - Branton) seemed to have been generally sharpened, while many retained the effects of transmutation from the experiment, temporarily disappearing and reappearing either at home, walking on the street, or sitting in bars or restaurants, to the consternation of onlookers and witnesses. Twice the ship's binnacle suddenly burst into flames while being taken ashore, with disastrous results to the carrier.' "The connection between Jessup and the Philadelphia Experiment." Berlitz continues, "was fortuitous or destined, according to one's interpretation. Dr. Jessup, who through his career as an astronomer had consistently inclined toward the study of UFOs, published an early book on the subject entitled THE CASE FOR THE UFO--Citadel Press, New York, 1955. Sometime subsequent to publication he read, among what he first thought to be letters in the normal run of fan mail, a two-part hand written communication from a person who signed himself Carl M. Allen (but Carlos Miguel Allende on the return address), containing references to a Navy experiment, at the Philadelphia Navy Yard and at sea, with names, dates, and rather unusual details. Consideration of some sections of this correspondence suggests why Jessup, as a scientist, found it so interesting that he replied with a request for more information. In the first letter, starting with a discussion of Einstein's 'unified field' theory, the writer stated:
"'...The "result" was complete invisibility of a ship, Destroyer type, AND ALL of its crew, while at sea (Oct. 1943). The field was effective in an oblate spheroidal shape, extending one hundred yards (more or less, due to the lunar positions and latitude) OUT from each beam of the ship. Any person within that sphere became vague in form BUT he too observed those persons aboard THAT ship as though they too were of the same state, yet were walking upon nothing. Any person without the sphere could see nothing save the CLEARLY DEFINED SHAPE OF THE SHIP'S HULL IN THE WATER, providing, of course, that the person was close enough to see, yet just barely outside of that field. Why tell you now? Very simple. If you choose to go mad, then you would reveal the information. Half of the officers and crew of that ship are at present mad as hatters. A few are even confined to certain areas where they may receive trained scientific aid when they either "Go Blank" or "Go Blank and Get Stuck". Going Blank i.e., an after effect of the men having been within the field too much, is not at all an unpleasant experience to healthily curious sailors. However it is when also, they "Get Stuck" that they call it "HELL INCORPORATED". The man thusly stricken cannot move of his own violation unless two or more of those who are within the field go and touch him, quickly, else he "Freezes".
"'If a man freezes his position must be marked out carefully and then the field is cut off. Everyone but the "frozen" man is able to move; to appreciate APPARENT solidarity again. Then, the newest member of the crew must approach the spot, where he will find the "frozen" man's face or bare skin, that is not covered by usual uniform clothing. Sometimes, it takes only an hour or so, sometimes all night and all day long, and worse, it once took 6 months, to get a man "unfrozen".
"'...DEEP "FROZEN MEN" ARE NOT AWARE OF TIME AS WE KNOW IT. They are like semi-comatose persons, who live, breathe, look and feel but still are unaware of so utterly many things as to constitute a "Nether World" to them. A man in an ordinary common freeze is aware of time, sometimes ACUTELY so. Yet they are ever aware of time precisely as you or I are aware of it. The first "Deep Freeze" as I said took 6 months to rectify. It also took over 5 million dollars worth of electronic equipment and a special ship berth. If, around or near the Philadelphia Navy Yard you see a group of sailors in the act of putting their hands upon a fellow OR upon "thin air", observe the digits and appendages of the stricken man. If they seem to waver, as though within a heat mirage, go QUICKLY and put your hands upon him, FOR THAT MAN IS THE VERY MOST DESPERATE OF MEN IN THE WORLD. NOT ONE OF THOSE MEN EVER WANT AT ALL TO BECOME AGAIN INVISIBLE. I DO NOT THINK THAT MUCH MORE NEED BE SAID AS TO WHY MAN IS NOT READY FOR FORCE-FIELD WORK.
"'You will hear phrases from these men such as "caught in the Flow" (or the "push") or "Stuck in the Green" or "Stuck in Molasses" or "I was going fast", these refer to some of the DECADE-LATER after effects of force field work. "Caught in the Flow" describes exactly the "Stuck in Molasses" sensation of a man going into "deep freeze" or "plain freeze", either of the two. "Caught in the Push" can either refer to that which a man feels briefly when he is either about to inadvertently "Go Blank" i.e., become invisible OR about to "Get Stuck" in a "deep freeze" or "plain freeze".
"'There are only a very few of the original Experimental D-E's crew left by now... Most went insane, one just walked "through" his quarters wall in the sight of his wife and child and two other crew members (was never seen again), two "went into the flame" i.e., they "froze" and caught fire while carrying common small-boat compasses (Note: Is it possible that the magnetic properties of the compasses somehow re-triggered the electromagnetic process, which in turn brought them in contact with underlying extremely powerful electrical currents which literally fried them to death? Admittedly, this is just supposition and may not be the whole explanation, however the possibility that this somehow ties in with the unexplained phenomena known as 'spontaneous human combustion' should not be ignored - Branton), one man carried the compass and caught fire, the other came for the "laying on of hands" as he was nearest but he too, took fire...(as in the case of the masts or beams of the ship itself when it was being brought ashore, as was previously mentioned - Branton). The faith in "hand laying" died when this happened and mens minds went by the score...
"'...The experiment was a complete success. THE MEN WERE COMPLETE FAILURES....'
"The balance of the original letter was concerned with suggestions to Jessup of how the report could be checked and other witnesses found. Jessup, his interest aroused, replied to the letter and asked for further proof of Allende's allegations. Within several months 'Allen' wrote again, this time offering to take sodium pentothal and subject himself to a hypnotist so that he could recall names and facts involved in the incident, which he, as an apparent witness, considered so important. Allen thought, however, that the Office of Naval Research would never 'let it be known that any such thing was ever allowed to be done.' In the second letter he added a theory of his own:
"'I feel that if handled properly, i.e., presented to people and science in proper psychologically effective manner, I feel sure that man will go where he now dreams of being...to the stars through the form of transport that the Navy accidently stumbled upon (to their embarrassment) WHEN THEIR EXPERIMENTAL SHIP TOOK OFF AND POPPED UP A MINUTE OR SO LATER SEVERAL HUNDRED SEA-TRAVEL-MILES AWAY AT ANOTHER OF ITS BERTHS IN THE CHESAPEAKE BAY AREA...'
"While Jessup was still considering the contents of the second letter, he received an invitation FROM THE DEPARTMENT OF THE NAVY TO COME TO THE OFFICE OF NAVAL RESEARCH (ONR) for an interview. When he presented himself at the ONR Headquarters in Washington, D.C., HE WAS, TO HIS CONSIDERABLE SURPRISE, GIVEN A COPY OF HIS OWN BOOK FOR EXAMINATION. It was explained to him that the book had been sent by mail to THE CHIEF OF ONR, ADMIRAL F. N. FURTH, IN THE SUMMER OF 1955 AND HAD BEEN EXAMINED BY OFFICERS IN THE ONR SPECIAL PROJECTS OFFICE AS WELL AS THE AERONAUTICS PROJECTS OFFICE. The book was filled with handwritten comments about Jessup's texts, apparently written by three people who had passed or sent the book one to the other and made their annotations in different colored inks. When Jessup started to examine the book, he found that the handwriting and style of one of the commentators was evidently that of Allen, his mysterious correspondent. The comments themselves were unusual for several reasons; THE COMMENTATORS OR CRITICAL REVIEWERS OF THE TEXT SEEMED TO ASSUME THE ROLES OF REPRESENTATIVES OF A SECRET AND ANCIENT CULTURE, HAVING KNOWLEDGE OF PREVIOUS SCIENTIFIC DEVELOPMENT ON EARTH...
"The comments were replete with references to force fields, dematerialization (and) great and small space ships.
"...However, along with these 'apparent' science fictional fancies, these comments made specific reference to secret naval experiments, especially the Philadelphia Experiment in 1943. Thus Jessup found himself again involved, through his book, in this curious affair, and, according to what he told several of his colleagues, he began to investigate the subject through his now established contact with the Navy. HOWEVER, HIS UNEXPECTED AND UNEXPLAINED DEATH IN 1959 ENDED HIS RESEARCH.
"Meanwhile, a limited number of copies of Dr. Jessup's book, mimeographed along with the complete series of puzzling annotations by the unidentified commentators, HAD BEEN REPRODUCED APPARENTLY AT THE REQUEST OF THE U.S. NAVY OR OF INDIVIDUAL NAVAL OFFICERS, BY A TEXAS ELECTRONICS FIRM, THE VARO CORPORATION OF DALLAS. COINCIDENTALLY THIS COMPANY WAS PERFORMING SPECIAL (OR SECRET) WORK FOR THE DEPARTMENT OF THE NAVY.
"The reproduction of the annotated edition and subsequent dissemination within naval and military circles contains the germ of yet another mystery, for, if the information handwritten on the original copy of the book were incorrect or imaginary, why should a limited edition be circulated within the Pentagon? The original Jessup book, without annotations, had cause no special stir, and apparently only the annotations with their 'informed' references to naval experiments had provoked official interest...
"Despite the scarcity of the reproduced annotated edition, most of the copies having disappeared either by chance or by design, (the late) Gray Barker (a former writer and UFO researcher) was able to preserve a copy and has since reproduced a small edition for sale to interested researchers--THE CASE FOR THE UFO: ANNOTATED EDITION, Gray Barker Books., Clarksburg, West Virginia.
"The 'apparent' suicide of Dr. Jessup deserves an additional comment. During the time between his first call from the Navy and his death he devoted a good deal of research to the Philadelphia Experiment and, while carefully observing the lines of security regulations, shared with Dr. Valentine some of his general findings and theories.
"Jessup told Valentine that the Navy had tried to find Allende (or Allen) from the return address on his correspondence with Jessup but had been unable to do so and, of course, had no leads on the identity of the other two commentators. Jessup was convinced that the experiment had actually taken place and that the attendant incidents had occurred as described. He considered that the unfortunate results as far as personnel were concerned were probably due to insufficient preparation or screening. Several experiments had already taken place, some at pierside and a rather dramatic and perhaps inadvertent one at sea, when the destroyer disappeared from convoy duty and reappeared at its berth at Norfolk and then shifted back to its dock at the Philadelphia Navy Yard.
"Jessup was worried about the experiments and told Valentine that the Navy had requested him to be a consultant on yet another experiment but that he had refused. He was convinced that the Navy, in seeking to create a magnetic cloud for camouflage purposes in October 1943, had uncovered a potential that could temporarily, and if strong enough perhaps permanently, rearrange the molecular structure of people and materials so that they would pass into another dimension with further implications of predictable and as yet uncontrolled teleportation. When Valentine, a student of the Bermuda Triangle Mystery since 1945, suggested that what was happening within the Triangle was a result of the same phenomena on a larger scale, Jessup tentatively agreed.
"Toward the middle of April 1959, Jessup told Valentine that HE HAD REACHED WHAT HE CONSIDERED TO BE SOME DEFINITE CONCLUSIONS ABOUT THE SERIES OF REACTIONS IMPLIED BY THE PHILADELPHIA EXPERIMENT AND HAD PREPARED A ROUGH DRAFT THAT HE WISHED TO DISCUSS. Dr. Valentine suggested that he come to dinner. The invitation was for the evening of April 20.
"He never came to dinner. At some time before 6:30 P.M., Jessup, according to police records, drove his car into Matheson's Hammock, a Dade County park in the Miami area, and apparently committed suicide by carbon monoxide inhalation, after attaching a hose to the exhaust and running the hose inside his car. NO NOTES OR MANUSCRIPTS were mentioned in the police report, nor, according to a statement by a witness later given to Dr. Valentine, WERE ANY FOUND INSIDE THE CAR.
"Dr. Valentine has mentioned an aspect of the incident ALSO NOT COVERED in the official report--that DR. JESSUP WAS STILL ALIVE WHEN FIRST FOUND, adding: '...PERHAPS HE WAS ALLOWED TO DIE. His theories were very advanced and PERHAPS THERE WERE...INFLUENCES THAT WISHED TO PREVENT THEIR SPREADING...'
"The more one digs into this alleged experiment the more curious it becomes. Certain elements of information can be verified but none referring directly to the experiment. A number of persons in and out of the Navy profess to remember the incident and are even willing to furnish more information about it, except that they are unwilling to be quoted by name. The circumstances are often considerably embellished; Navy Yard personnel seem to remember stories and even short newspaper articles about a sailors' brawl in a Philadelphia bar where some of the participants vanished and reappeared out of a haze during the fight, to the surprise and discomfort of their opponents. The approximate date of the main incident is generally agreed on and the consensus among people employed at the docks at the time was that something very unusual was going on at the Philadelphia Navy Yard.
"Whatever the truth of the incident, the destroyer mentioned as taking part in the experiment, the U.S.S. ELDRIDGE, D-173, DID exist. it was commissioned August 27, 1943, and was engaged in escort and patrol missions around Bermuda, Chesapeake Bay, and the seas between until early 1944, when it was sent across the Atlantic and could therefore fit within the time frame indicated. The ship was decommissioned in June 1946 and eventually transferred, under the Mutual Defense Assistance Program, to Greece, where, one might hope, it ceased to display its attributed propensity for disappearing. The Liberty ship S.S. ANDREW FURNSETH, from the decks of which the disappearance of the D-173 was allegedly seen, was also actually in the area at the time indicated, as was the S.S. MALAY, another cargo ship that reportedly witnessed the same subsequent incidents.
"Efforts to contact or interrogate some of the presumed participants or observers of the incident have generally proved unsuccessful, as many have disappeared, others have proved uncommunicative, and others reply that they do not wish to get involved or are protected by family members who relay the message that they do not wish to talk about it.
"If a confidential or secret freeze has really been established over the Navy or merchant ships and personnel involved directly or indirectly in the experiment at the time, then the verification of the incident would be extremely difficult to follow through, especially since it occurred so long ago. It should be observed in passing, however, that the full import of an experiment is often not realized or apparent until years after the initial tests.
"It may also be possible that personnel who were involved with other camouflage incidents during World War II may have given rise to a series of rumors that contributed to the Philadelphia Experiment legend... Several other unusual concepts, INCLUDING THE MILITARY USE OF ANTIGRAVITY, were also a subject of experimentation.
"An investigator working with the Navy and possessed of a knowledge of Navy filing practices as well as a strong desire for anonymity confided to the author that he had tried for months at the Pentagon and elsewhere to locate ONR reports dealing with the original experiment but he had been unsuccessful. 'However,' he added, 'I DID FIND ONE UNUSUAL THING. THE FRAMEWORK IS SET UP AND THE EXPERIMENT IS STILL CONTINUING.'
"Although Jessup's final conclusions may never be known, some of the ideas exchanged by Drs. Jessup and Valentine during their discussions of the Philadelphia Experiment and its relation to the Bermuda Triangle are echoed in the following answers by Dr. Valentine to some questions put to him by the author:
"QUESTION: You have previously said that Dr. Jessup thought that the U.S. Navy had inadvertently discovered the natural or induced combination of circumstances that caused the disappearances in the Triangle. Could you comment on this more fully?
"'ANSWER: I DO NOT BELIEVE Dr. Jessup considered this an 'inadvertent' discovery. For many years, so I have been told, experiments involving high intensity magnetism have been officially discouraged, JUST AS ION MOTORS, known for as far back at least as 1918, have been denied public disclosure and their inventors somehow silenced. I therefore am convinced that top ranking physicists must have some knowledge--AND UNDERSTANDABLE DREAD--of phenomena that might be expected to emerge from the generation of a high intensity magnetic field, especially a pulsating or vortexual one.'
"QUESTION: In the case of the Philadelphia Experiment is there a fairly simple scientific explanation as to what took place?
"'ANSWER: To my knowledge there is no explanation in terms of the familiar or orthodox. Many scientists now share the opinion that the basic ATOMIC STRUCTURE is essentially electric (i.e. 'electron') in nature rather than materially particulate. A vastly complicated interplay of energies is involved. Such a broad concept lends great flexibility to the universe. If multiple phases of matter within such a cosmos did NOT exist, it would be most surprising. The transition from one phase to another would be equivalent to the passage from one plane of existence to another--a sort of interdimensional metamorphosis. In other words, there could be 'worlds within worlds.' (Note: Human beings actually DO exist on both the physical and spiritual levels simultaneously, in that we have attached to our souls both a physical and a spiritual 'body'. It is apparent that man is a 'multi-dimensional' being who is capable of 'sensing' a wide range of the 'electromagnetic' reality spectrum. Much of what we consider to be exclusively 'physical' senses such as feeling, intuition, sight, hearing, tough, thought, etc., are a COMBINATION of the result of interaction of our physical and spiritual natures. Just because one has a 'spiritual' nature however does not mean that they have 'Life' in the Judeo-Christian sense of spiritual 'life'. The triune nature of man's physical, soul and spirit 'bodies' which are distinct in themselves yet at the same time superimposed upon one another and inseparable from one another in an underlying sense, act as 'vessels' for either Life-Goodness-Love or Death-Evil-Hatred. Many have been confused by the idea that because something or someone is 'spiritual' it/they must therefore be 'Good'. This is not necessarily the case, since some may consider the Philadelphia Experiment as a 'spiritual', 'supernatural' or 'ethereal' event even though some of the motives and certainly many of the effects of the experiments were less that 'Divinely' inspired - Branton) Magnetism has long been suspect as an involvement agent in such potentially drastic changes. To begin with, IT HAPPENS TO BE THE ONLY INANIMATE PHENOMENON FOR WHICH WE HAVE BEEN UNABLE TO CONCEIVE A MECHANICAL ANALOGUE. We can visualize electrons traveling along a conductor and thus 'explain' electric current, or we can envisage energy waves of different frequencies in the ether and thus 'explain' the heat-light-radio spectrum (Note: Another 'mystery' which we might mention at this point is that 'light' in itself is made up of THREE waves which collectively form the ONE energy source known as 'Light'. One ray is invisible, one is visible, and one can be felt! Those with discernment will be able to see yet another fascinating 'mystery' in this three-in-one phenomena. Also, 'Light' has a duel nature in that it acts as a 'PARTICLE' as well as a 'WAVE', and as the 'Unified Field' suggests many of these energies such as time, light, gravity, electricity, magnetism, space, matter, etc., flow into each other and interplay with each other to a remarkable degree - Branton). But a magnetic field defies a mechanical interpretation. THERE IS SOMETHING ALMOST MYSTICAL ABOUT IT. Furthermore, whenever we encounter incredible (to us) materialization and dematerialization, as in UFO phenomena, they seem to be accompanied by severe magnetic disturbances. It is, therefore, reasonable to suppose that a purposeful genesis of unusual magnetic conditions could effect a change or PHASE in matter, both physical and vital. If so, it would also DISTORT the time element which is by no means an independent entity, but part-in-parcel of the particular matter-energy-time dimension such as the one we live in.'
"QUESTION: If this is the result of intensification of magnetism, are there, in your opinion, intensified magnetic fields sporadically active or 'on the loose' in the Triangle?
"'ANSWER: I believe that this is unquestionably the case (Note: Some believe the Bermuda Triangle area may once have been part of an experiment that went out of control on an ancient continent inhabited by Antediluvians who discovered the secret of 'culturing' huge crystal generators to produce tremendous electromagnetic energy fields. The 'Triangle' is believed by many to be an area of intense 'electromagnetic fallout' still active after thousands of years - Branton). Either the magnetic fields are the result of sporadic, perhaps seasonal build-up of geophysical origin, or they are the concomitant effect of UFO activity. Possibly a combination of both agencies can occur. Another important aspect to consider is the likelihood of magnetic, cyclonic storms initiated by either condition. Like the tornado, the magnetic vortex would be self-augmenting and could well bring about an interdimensional transition for anyone caught up in it. The experience of Bruce Gernon (mentioned in Berlitz' book - Branton) is a case in point.'
"...Whether the Philadelphia Experiment actually took place or not is difficult to prove. The concept, however, is a valid one, having been perhaps suggested or supported by Einstein's 'unified field' theory, an attempt logically to bring together the magnetic and gravitational fields and other subatomic phenomena. In application both to the Philadelphia Experiment and the Bermuda Triangle, the attraction between molecules could be temporarily altered by a force field. It would, in effect, introduce matter into another dimension or, one might say, the etheric world. Such force fields comprise both the cause and effect of the transmutation and transference of matter. If this seems impossible or illogical, one might reflect that another seemingly impossible theory of Einstein and others have modified our lives and physical outlook since 1945 to the point where those of us who lived before that time would hardly recognize our former personalities, so secure in our dominion of the earth and understanding our section of the universe..."
Ivan T. Sanderson, in his book 'UNINVITED VISITORS', gives a few more details concerning the Philadelphia Experiment as well as the mysterious 'annotators' mentioned by Charles Berlitz:
"...From the language and style of the inserts, the Office of Naval Research (ONR) speculated that the annotators may be gypsies. They found the book sufficiently interesting to re- publish it three years later in a limited mimeographed edition in two colors--black for the original text, red for the notes, interjections, underscoring, and the like. The notes discussed people, planes, and ships that have disappeared; the origins of odd storms and clouds, objects falling from the sky, and strange marks and footprints; and other puzzling events and phenomena that we have not been able to explain. 'It is evident,' concluded the introduction to the Navy's mimeographed edition 'that these men provide some very intriguing explanations; explanations that may be worthy of consideration...'
"Gypsies are now scattered all over the world. Nobody has ever come up with any satisfactory information as to their origin--at least, not satisfactory to me. Some people say they wandered out of what is now India long ago. They have been called lost Ancient Egyptians, and goodness knows what else... We don't know much about their current culture, despite the massive studies of their folklore and customs that have been undertaken in Europe, this country, and elsewhere. As a kid I did a lot of poaching with some gypsies of my own age in the New Forest in England, and we had some fine rabbit stews," Sanderson confesses, "and spitted pheasants as a result; but my young friends, though never having been to school and being totally illiterate, always made me feel as if I were the only 'kid' among them, and that they were infinitely adult and wise (Note: Researcher John A. Keel has stated that there is a definite connection between some UFO sightings and 'gypsies' - Branton). They were, too! But the Western gypsies are relatively 'normal and respectable' compared to the Asiatic LULI. Since the dawn of history these bands of independent and completely self-contained people have wandered about at will over Asia, helping themselves to what they needed but never actually marauding or interfering with other people, and trading in all manner of psychedelic products, elixirs, drugs, and medicines, gazing into crystal balls--the origin of which, incidentally, has never been discovered--prophesying and reading palms. They have no written language, yet they seem to keep in touch over vast distances, even with their confreres in Europe and over the oceans. Subjected to a never-ending series of persecutions, they do truly just 'fade away' only to pop up again later apparently in no way changed. They learn the languages of the peoples among whom they dwell, and they often contend that they know no other..."

The following article: 'NEW FACTS ABOUT THE PHILADELPHIA EXPERIMENT REVEALED', by Sherry Hansen Steiger and Brad Steiger, appeared in UFO REVIEW magazine, and adds a considerable amount of new information to the revelations already given by Charles Berlitz: "Just when it seemed as through the bizarre mystery of Dr. M.K. Jessup, the so-called 'Allende Letters,' and the alleged U.S. Navy's World War II experiment in teleportation and invisibility had faded into the recesses of UFO mythology, Alfred Bielek, a researcher who I have personally known for twenty years, has stepped forward to declare that his memory - once 'brainwashed' - has cleared and that he now remembers having participated in the legendary 'Philadelphia Experiment.'
"Bielek claims that the U.S. Navy, in October, 1943, successfully blended the collective genius of Albert Einstein, Nicola Tesla, and a host of other top scientists and SECRETLY ACCOMPLISHED the teleportation of a warship from Philadelphia to a dock near Norfolk. In a further extension of Einstein's Unified Field Theory, the Navy caused the same warship and its crew to become invisible.
"Yes, Bielek asserts, the experiment was a success as far as the warship and the machinery were concerned. Tragically, for the crewmen, it was a terrible failure. Several of the crew burst into flames in spontaneous human combustion; others lapsed into invisibility; still others became frozen in the metal structure of the warship. Over half of the officers and crew members were committed to psychiatric wards for the remainder of their lives.
"Once it seemed as though the only man who might be able to ferret out the truth of this fantastic experiment was Dr. Morris K. Jessup, an alleged suicide 'victim,' who was found dead in his station wagon in Dade County Park, Florida, on the evening of April 29, 1959.
"Fully as horrifying as the deep-freeze effect on the sailors involved in the experiment were the incidents of men who went 'into the flame.' A man who was carrying a small boat compass went into the 'freeze' and began to smoulder. Perhaps, Allende theorized, because of the metal on his person. Another crewman went to his aid and began the laying on of hands. According to Allende, both men burned for eighteen days.
"As a list of cross-references for his fantastic story, Allende listed a number of or personnel on observer ships' crews and the crew of a Matson Lines Liberty ship out of Norfolk. Allende implies that he himself witnessed the experiment from aboard the S.S. ANDREW FURNSETH. Indignantly Allende expressed his hope that Jessup may choke on his own tongue when he remembers what he has 'appealed be made law,' and he signs himself, 'Very disrespectfully yours.'
"Then, seemingly to think better of his harsh statements, Allende affixed a lengthy postscript that states his reconsidered opinion that the Navy was quite blameless in the incident and really did not envision the ghastly effect the experiment would have upon the crew members. Before he closed, Allende tossed one more bombshell:
"'The experimental ship disappeared from its Philadelphia dock and, only a very few minutes later, appeared at its other dock in Norfolk, Newport News, Portsmouth area. This was distinctly and clearly identified as being [the] place...the ship then, AGAIN disappeared and went back to it's Philadelphia dock in only a very few minutes. This was noted in the newspapers...after the experiments were discontinued....'
"Authors Note: In 1967, through the efforts of a mutual friend, I obtained a copy of the annotated Jessup Book from Al Bielek, an action which subsequently has prompted the suspicious to suggest that Al is actually Miguel Allende in another guise. Such suspicions will be allayed (later on).
"The three annotators were smug, a trifle arrogant, and made little effort to control their mockery of 'homo sapiens'. After a rapid assessment of the content, Dr. Jessup soon recognized the same crazy-quilt spelling, capitalization and punctuation that was characteristic of his mysterious pen pal, Carlos Miguel Allende.
"The ONR requested the two Allende letters from Jessup, and twenty-five copies of the letters and the annotated copy of THE CASE FOR THE UFOS were reproduced for study by Naval Research teams.
"Why did the Navy want the Allende letters? What elevated the letters above kook status? Had the experiment with the invisible ship actually been conducted? The three mystery note makers allude to the secret project a number of times. What elements in both the Allende letters and in the notes did ONR find so convincing and so alarming that immediate study groups were formed to deal with the puzzle? Let us examine a sampling of the notes made by Allende and his correspondents. (Each man wrote in a different color of ink and, on this basis, will be referred to as Mr. A. [Allende], Mr. B. and Jemi.)
"Jessup begins part of THE CASE FOR THE UFOS by noting that, on June 24, 1947, flying saucers were 'born' with Kenneth Arnold's sighting near Mount Rainier (actually, documented sightings of unexplained aerial craft have been made since medieval times and even long before then. It was not until 1947 however that UFOs again reached a height of publicity that had not been experienced since the 'airship' sightings of 1900-1910 - Branton). Since that day, Jessup writes, thousands of other sightings have been made and the question 'What are they?' must still be answered.
"'Don't worry, Jemi,' Mr. B. writes, referring to Arnold's sighting, 'those were L-M ships, not 'S' men ('LeMurians' and'Serpent-Men'? This is only a guess, although the 'annotators' may have been referring to something completely different - Branton). They are in improved type and were only on a training flight. That is why their leader interconnected their force fields to teach them Level Telecontrol without inducing a fear block.' (Note: If true that they were on a 'training' flight, it's likely that this alien society was earth-based, possibly operating from subterrain or inner-mountain bases, as it is not likely that mere 'trainees' from another planet would take part in other-planetary operations - Branton)
"In this enigmatic notion, we obviously have references to two types of 'people' who have conquered space. The 'LM's' seem to be friendly or indifferent to earthlings. The 'SM's' - the 'S' men mentioned above - are hostile. Allende and his correspondents seem either to be LM's or to regard the LM's more favorably than they do the SM's.
"Jemi's comment on Jessup's discussion of mysterious disappearances of men is chilling, 'Hey! If he only knew why, he'd die of shock!'
"An interesting unrelated notation scribbled by Mr. B on the top of the page reads: 'The French are of such a general philosophic attitude, even in that day, that they were chosen to be contacted. Now, some LM's live in France out of preference in field of philosophical study. They like it!'
"Mr. A: 'Einstein wasn't alive then, but the natural functions of our universe and this planet worked quite well without him.'
"Jemi: 'What inspiration caused man to become man by starting to use tools. Whence came the idea? Science says "of necessity," but the same necessity exists for apes...even now.'
"Mr. A: 'Huh, he'll never admit it (that man is neither the completely dominant nor supremely intellectual being), pride!'
"Jessup wonders if aviators could be frozen by space ships and carried away within a shield of invisibility.
"Mr. B retorts: "Heh! If only he knew by experience he'd keep silent and not write or speak of it ever again in his lifetime. He couldn't speak it, for you see, Jemi, it paralyses one's sense of time and nullified mental cognition, functioning, and memory. So he has no knowledge, he could not have. Only guessing.'
"As to Jessup's speculation that 'Russia may well have captured a UFO and be developing the resources gained therefrom...' Mr. B writes: 'Not so, or else she'd have cornered the world's diamond market by now as a dead giveaway that she's caught one. Takes a powerful magnetic net to do so.' (Note: Do 'some' disks require the use of diamond crystals to operate some of their systems? - Branton)
"Mr. A: 'One with a reverse "snap neutralizer" in it.'"
Steiger relates still another comment made by Mr. B in answer to one of the many points brought up by Jessup in his book, apparently in reference to some type of accident or incident:
"'...The Measure-Marker was accidentally left idling that time. Nowadays, Measure-Markers are not used, except by Undersea-Explorers.'
"And so," Steiger continues, "the notes continue throughout the pages of M.K. Jessup's (annotated) THE CASE FOR THE UFOS. Each page is marked with underlinings and notations made in three different colors of ink. In an introduction to their study of the Allende letters and the annotated (volume)... an officer of the Office of Naval Research wrote:
"'Terms such as mothership, home-ship, dead-ship, Great ARK, great bombardment, great RETURN, great war, little-men, force-fields, deep freezes, undersea building, measure markers, scout ships, MAGNETIC and gravity fields, sheets of diamond, cosmic rays, force cutters, undersea explorers, inlay work, clear-talk, telepathing, burning 'coat', nodes, vortice, magnetic 'net', and what happens to people, ships and planes that have disappeared... They (the three men) explain the origin of odd storms and clouds, objects falling from the sky, strange marks and footprints, and other things we have not solved.
"'These men seem to feel that it is too late for man to obtain space flight. They feel that man could not cope with 'those mind-wreaking conditions that space and sea contain', for mankind is too egotistical, values too much the material, wars over mere parcels of this planet, is too filled with jealousy, and lacks true brotherhood.'"
"The ONR deduced that the men might be Gypsies. In one instance, Mr. B remarks, 'Only a Gypsy will tell another of that catastrophe. And we are a discredited people, ages ago. Hah! Yet, man wonders where 'we' come from...' Mr. A writes, 'Ours is a way of life, time-proven and happy. We have nothing, own nothing except our music and philosophy, and are happy.' Each of the men hails the other as 'brother' and sneers quite often at 'vain humankind.'
"The officer at ONR concluded his introduction to the enigma by saying: 'How much truth is there in this? That cannot be answered. It is evident that these men provide some very intriguing explanations - explanations that may be worth consideration.'
"First of all, why did the Navy receive the annotated copy of Jessup's THE CASE FOR THE UFOS? Was it simply to play some bizarre private joke on the Office of Naval Research? This answer seems unlikely. Let us theorize that the Navy DID accomplish a secret experiment which utilized Einstein's Unified Field Theory. In this case, the three mystery men might have been letting the Navy know that THEY knew. The Gypsies or saucer people or whoever, might also have been telling the Navy that they knew that naval research was CONTINUING experimentation.
"As we learn more about our universe, it becomes increasingly difficult to close one's mind to the possibility of older atomic civilizations of either TERRESTRIAL or extraterrestrial origin which might have survived physically, by going UNDERGROUND, or spiritually, by commemoration in the myths and legends of today's man.
"Could Carlos Miguel Allende and his two friends be representatives from a much older civilization which has been infiltrating our own for thousands of years?
"Many of those who have attempted to pursue the Allende mystery have found themselves confronted by strange, dark-skinned men in black. A prominent UFO lecturer told me that a man claiming to be Carlos Miguel Allende had called upon him in his study and warned him to discontinue his research or 'wind up a "Suicide" like Dr. Jessup.'
"One cannot help wondering what association there might be between the so-called 'men-in-black' who make a practice of silencing UFO researchers and Dr. Jessup's unknown correspondents (John A. Keel suggests this in other writings of his when he relates incidents of Men In Black or Black automobiles being observed in connection with Gypsy activity - Branton). Those who have been visited by the silencers have described their unwelcome guests as being short, dark, and dressed primarily in black. Such a description could fit 'Gitana' or those MASQUERADING as Gypsies. UFO investigators say that those contacted by the silencers describe their features as being somewhat Oriental in structure, with large slanted eyes and rather sharply pointed chins.
"Similarly, the majority of those who claim contact with flying saucer crews describe much the same physical beings. Several abductees have offered similar descriptions.
"After I had published an article on the Allende letters in SAGA (November, 1967) I began to receive a great deal of mail from those who claimed personal involvement in this bizarre aspect of the UFO mystery.
"One letter implied that the writer had been a seaman aboard the vessel on which the alleged experiment had taken place. 'You would not write of this so objectively if you were forced to live with this horror,' the man wrote.
"Several correspondents told of being harassed by ominous and effective 'agents' after they had witnessed UFO activity.
"An interesting report of 'three women in black' was given by one correspondent, who had received his strange visitation after observing a large, gray disk in the sky over his suburban residence.
"An anonymous letter writer told of witnessing phenomena which he believed to be related to the alleged secret Navy experiment. During the Second World War, his landlady's son went into the Navy, and it was believed that he had died while in service. Some years later, however, our correspondent met a young man of the son's description in the hallway of the rooming house. The young man said 'hello,' then 'vanished like a ghost.'
"The boarder often saw the young man appear, then vanish. On one occasion the strange man appeared , began to weep, and begged the landlady for some bread. The matter became even more confused in the boarder's mind when the young sailor's widow, who continued to reside with her mother-in-law for many years after her husband's presumed death, moved out after obtaining a DIVORCE.
"Had the landlady's son been one of those unfortunate seamen aboard the experimental naval vessel?
"Such things are 'incredible,' pronounce the representatives of various earthly establishments, 'contrary to the laws of science.' And so they may be, but we may soon learn that there are many undreamt-of facts that are 'contrary to the laws' of our science.
"The mystery of the true reality of the Philadelphia Experiment has taunted UFO researchers for over thirty years. Now Al Bielek claims to have the key to unlock the rusted door of secrecy.
"...Just when those of us who research such incredible reports and attempt to define them as mysteries or myths had decided that it was time to put the Philadelphia Experiment to rest, in September of 1989, Alfred Bielek stepped before the audience gathered in Phoenix for the UFO-NEW AGE CONFERENCE and startled everyone by announcing that he had been a part of the astonishing experiment and that he had survived time-warping, invisibility, and electromagnetic zapping to emerge from a period of brainwashing to tell his story.
"Alfred Bielek: Actually, the Philadelphia Experiment, at least in its preliminary stages, probably began about 1932-'33 in the Chicago area. The popular scientific press of the day was very hot on the subject of invisibility.
"It was at that time that a small team of scientists got together and started to investigate the subject and its possibilities. The team included John Hutchinson, Dean of the University of Chicago; the brilliant Nicola Tesla; and a third man who has been very hard to identify. I finally tracked him down as Dr. Emil Kurtenauer, an Austrian, who had a Ph.D. in physics.
"THEN ARE YOU SAYING THAT THE PHILADELPHIA EXPERIMENT BEGAN AS A CIVILIAN PROJECT?
"Bielek: Although it was a private research operation, it was apparently funded by the Navy from the very beginning. It was soon moved to the east coast and wound up at the Institute for Advanced Studies at Princeton University, which had been formed in 1933. Einstein and a number of very interesting people became associated with the Institute, but one of the first, and perhaps one of the youngest members that they had join them in 1933, was Dr. John Eric Von Neumann.
"WAS TESLA ALSO A PART OF THE WORK AT THE INSTITUTE?
"Bielek: He rejoined them in perhaps the late '30s. Because of his close connection with Franklin D. Roosevelt, who became President in 1933, Tesla had been called to Washington to do work for the government. He was assigned to several projects, the principal one of which later resulted in the Philadelphia Experiment.
"One of Tesla's projects was the so-called 'Death Ray.' Most people don't know this, but the machine was actually built by the U.S. Army in 1938-'39 and was tested in New Mexico.
"I heard from a friend, someone who was connected with the government, and from an acquaintance who had worked with Tesla, that the ray truly worked. It was so devastating and its effects so terrible that the government decided that it was too dangerous for anyone to control. They destroyed the working model; they destroyed the records; they destroyed the plans. The officers in charge said that they would rather see the thing destroyed than to be put into possible use by an enemy.
"Tesla then proposed a similar system to the British, and he was also turned down by them. Somewhat disgruntled, he turned his talents to a radio-controlled automobile that extracted its power from the air around it. He converted a Pierce-Arrow and drove it around Manhattan to the delight of the press and the people. Tesla's nephew also drove the car in upstate New York.
"WHEN DID TESLA GET BACK TO WORK ON THE PHILADELPHIA EXPERIMENT?
"Bielek: I believe that he was its first director when it got to the point where the project required complete organization.
"Perhaps the single greatest contributor to the project, however, was Dr. John Von Neumann. Born in Budapest, Hungary, he demonstrated a genius in mathematics at an early age. He had been at the University of Berlin and the University of Hamburg when he immigrated to the United States in 1930. He went immediately to Princeton where he became a Visiting Professor of Mathematics. In 1933, he was invited to join the Institute.
"AND WHAT ABOUT EINSTEIN'S PARTICIPATION IN THE PROJECT?
"Bielek: Einstein did not take part in any physical way in the project, which, by the way, was called 'Project Rainbow.'
"Einstein was strictly a theoretical physicist. He was not at all a nuts and bolts man. The experiment, in part, was being run as an application of his Unified Field Theory, but Einstein, though aware of Project Rainbow, was involved in many other projects at the Institute.
"There was another participant who is rather well-known to UFOlogists because of his work with electrostatically controlled UFOs. I refer to T. Townsend Brown, who was excellent at the nuts and bolts application of physics.
"AL, PLEASE TELL US ABOUT YOUR OWN INVOLVEMENT IN THE PHILADELPHIA EXPERIMENT.
"Bielek: I began investigating the mystery back in the 1960's, strictly as a research project. I had no idea then that I would discover that I had such a personal involvement in the whole incredible business.
"AND NOW YOU HAVE SOMEHOW REMEMBERED THAT YOU HAVE BEEN LEADING A DOUBLE LIFE. YOU HAVE EXPERIENCED ONE LIFE AS ALFRED BIELEK AND ANOTHER AS EDWARD A. CAMERON.
"Bielek: That is correct. And I have learned that I have a half-brother, Duncan. We were the sons of Alexander Duncan Cameron, a wealthy ex-Navy man who had five wives in succession and numerous mistresses.
"My brother got his Ph.D. in physics from the University of Edinburgh, Scotland. I received my Ph.D. in physics at Harvard.
"AS EDWARD A. CAMERON, NOT AS ALFRED BIELEK.
"Bielek: Yes. I haven't been able to document all of this yet, but I have memory flashes of the classes and the professors.
"Duncan and I had followed the advice of our father and had entered a naval officers' training program. In September of 1939, we were assigned to Provincetown, Rhode Island, Officers Training School. After a brief tour of duty, we were assigned to the Institute at Princeton.
"Tesla was in charge of Project Rainbow at the time, and Von Neumann, a superior mathematician, seemed to be next in command.
"In September of 1940, we applied coils and generators to a mine sweeper and accomplished a successful transition into invisibility.
"WAIT A MINUTE! ARE YOU SAYING THAT THERE WAS A SUCCESSFUL EXPERIMENT IN INVISIBILITY IN 1940 BEFORE THE ILL-FATED BOGGLE IN 1943?
"Bielek: Yes, but we used no personnel on board the mine sweeper. We used only the ship.
"The experiment was heavily classified, of course. Almost immediately the maritime service became interested.
"Remember, the United States was not yet at war, but the handwriting was on the wall. Everyone knew that it probably wouldn't be too long before the Nazi submarines were sniping at out ships.
"What Project Rainbow sought to do was to accomplish radar and visual invisibility. And at this time, the Navy seemed to have unlimited resources. Roosevelt was an old Navy man, and he lavished big budgets on his favorite branch of the service.
"After the successful demonstration with the mine sweeper, my brother and I were sent on a tour of duty aboard the Pennsylvania. We were in San Francisco when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor, and early in 1942, we were summoned back to the Institute. It was now imperative that Project Rainbow produce more successful results as soon as possible.
"Tesla had designed special coils for the generators and transformers. Everything was built to endure powerful jolts of electricity.
"WEREN'T YOU CONCERNED TO BE WORKING AROUND SO MUCH HIGH VOLTAGE APPARATUS?
"Bielek: Tesla was. He became very concerned when he learned that the experiment would now include a live crew. He protested that the scientists had no true idea of what would happen to the personnel on board the ship.
"Everyone always talks about the genius of Tesla. Without taking any of his genius away from him, it must be admitted that he was a very unusual person. I am convinced that he had a definite extraterrestrial connection. An acquaintance who used to work with Tesla has said that he talked to 'someone' off-planet everyday.
"HOW FAR DID TESLA CARRY HIS PROTEST THAT THE EXPERIMENT WOULD BE TOO DANGEROUS FOR THE PERSONNEL?
"Bielek: He insisted that the Navy give Project Rainbow more time before the experiments would be conducted. They told him to forget it. There was a war going on. He was told to make the experiment work.
"On a cold day in March, 1942, all the levers were pulled to place the test ship - a battleship - into invisibility - and nothing happened.
"I remain convinced that Tesla deliberately sabotaged the experiment. The apparent failure of the experiment permitted him to say, 'Well, it is obvious the experiment was unsuccessful. Now, I have to get back to work on other projects. Good-bye.'"There was no way that he would risk that many human lives.
"He left the project, and ten months later, on January 7, 1943, he was found dead in his hotel room in New York.
"WEREN'T YOU CONCERNED WHEN TESLA LEFT THE PROJECT?
"Bielek: Absolutely. My brother and I also had picked up on a personal problem - for others and ourselves. Understand that we would be in the hold of the test ship. We would not be watching the experiment from the safety of the dock.
"Van Neumann was now in charge, and he switched to a pulse modulation of energy. He lopped off a forward turret from the Eldridge so that he could place two large generators in the hold. Four transmitters were on deck. T. Townsend Brown placed a special transmitter in the hold and an antenna on the 'tower'. Yet another massive generator to power the system was brought on board.
"Early in June, a seaman who was helping us in the hold was struck down by a huge arc of energy.
"In late June, they decided the Eldridge should be tested for seaworthiness, and the vessel left with a temporary captain.
"On July 20th, we were all ready and assembled for the experiment.
"At 0900 hours, on July 22nd, someone flipped the main switch, and for twenty minutes the Eldridge was invisible to radar and to visual contact.
"We returned twenty minutes later with most of the crew demented. My brother and I must have been spared because we were in the hold, and most of the equipment was on deck.
"In spite of the heavy loss of personnel to hysteria and near insanity, we were given twenty-one days to try it again.
"This time, they told us, we would try only for radar invisibility, not optical invisibility. After all, the important thing was to confuse enemy radar. It was not really necessary to be invisible. Besides, what if invisible ships started ramming each other with their radar ineffective?
"On August 12, with a new crew, the experiment began afresh. For sixty to seventy seconds, the Eldridge was invisible to radar.
"Then there was a blue flash - and the ship disappeared. There was not even a waterline to mark its visible presence. It was gone.
"For four hours it was gone.
"YOU CLAIM THAT YOU AND YOUR NEWLY DISCOVERED HALF-BROTHER WERE ON BOARD. WHERE DID YOU GO FOR FOUR HOURS?
"Bielek: We saw crewmen all around us going crazy, so we jumped off the ship. But instead of landing in the water of the Philadelphia harbor, we landed on the grass at the Montauk Army Base on Long Island, New York. Dr. Von Neumann was waiting for us. It is said that he died in 1957. No way! He was there in Montauk in '83. (Note: If Bielek is telling the truth, then Von Neumann most likely became aware of the missing men after the initial experiment, calculated that they had been caught in a parallel though extremely swift 'time current', and to put it simply 'pulled them from the river' by establishing some type of electromagnetic 'window' through which he was able to pull them out from the 'side-stream' back into the 'main-current' of our time-space existence - Branton)
"We had somehow been sucked into hyperspace and been pulled into the future.
"And guess what had been pulled along with us? Between August 4 and August 12, we had sighted UFOs hovering over the Eldridge. Well, a (remote controlled? - Branton) UFO was sucked along with us to Montauk - and it was dismantled there!
"WHAT OF THE OTHER PERSONNEL?
"Bielek: Once again, it seems that Duncan and I survived because we had been in the hold. But the terrible irony is that not even one single member of the crew would have had to suffer if the experiment had been one day earlier or later.
"WHAT DID THE DATE HAVE TO DO WITH IT?
"Bielek: Although no one knew it then, the most important piece of equipment on the Eldridge was Tesla's Zero Time Generator.
"This incredible device was created to lock into the basic Zero Time of our galaxy. It provides a physical-cosmological lockup that must be in place before one can attempt all of these exotic experiments in teleportation and invisibility.
"The UFOs had been trying to warn us that we must not attempt our experiment on August 12. It appears that the Earth has its own biorhythm, just as we humans and all living things do. There is a twenty year peak that occurred that year on August 12, 1943. We were pulled into hyperspace and emerged forty years later on 1982. (Apparently two 20-year 'cycles' later. Note that this was FORWARD 'travel' rather than backwards as the time 'stream' cannot flow back on itself - Branton)
"As Von Neumann explained, what he needed in 1943 to ensure the experiment's success was a computer. Each individual had his own Time Lock Reference. When this reference is disrupted by extreme power, people can literally be torn away from their moments in Time and drift away into another point of reference.
"Although Von Neumann believed that he had correctly calculated the Zero Time Reference, only a computer could have done so for each crewman. Therefore, some of the men did not come back to the precise moment in the Past/Present of 1943 in which they had left. And they only needed to be off (i.e. out of frequency or phase - Branton) by a mini-second to find themselves embedded in a steel bulkhead.
"Von Neumann did collaborate on Maniac One, an early model of a very successful computer, which in spite of its massive bulk and size, was very effective. Unfortunately, it was much too late to help the crewmen of the Eldridge.
"When the warship returned to visibility in the Navy yard, four men were embedded into various parts of the Eldridge. Some had burst into flame. Others were glowing. Most of the rest were insane. Only those shielded by steel walls or decking survived.
"WHY WASN'T THERE A GREAT PUBLIC OUTCRY OVER SUCH A TERRIBLE MILITARY DISASTER?
"Bielek: Remember, this experiment was as classified as the research on the atomic bomb. The whole incident was swept under the Navy's rug. Cover stories were created. Men were placed in asylums.
"You must also place this incident in time perspective with the enormous war effort that was taking place. London was being bombed. We were taking our lumps in the Pacific. The wounded were coming back from everywhere.
"AS AN ASIDE, WHAT HAPPENED TO THE WARSHIP THAT WAS USED IN THE EXPERIMENT?
"Bielek: Strangely enough, they tried another experiment with her somewhere around October 27th - this time without personnel. Once again, the Eldridge disappeared. WHEN SHE RETURNED, IT WAS DAMAGED AND HALF OF ITS EQUIPMENT WAS MISSING. I didn't say the EQUIPMENT was 'damaged.' I said, 'missing!'
"After this incident the Powers That Be pronounced that they had had enough of such experiments. The Eldridge was on active duty until 1946. After she was removed from duty, she was 'mothballed' for a time. Then, later, in 1951, she was transferred to the Greek Navy.
"WE'RE A BIT UNCLEAR AS TO HOW YOU AND YOUR BROTHER CAME TO BE GIVEN TWO IDENTITIES.
"Bielek: Let me explain this way: In 1947 or '48, Dr. Von Neumann, armed with a rudimentary, but effective, airborne system caused a F-80 jet fighter to disappear from radar. Both pilot and plane seemed just fine, but the scientist decided to ground the pilot and keep him under wraps for a year, just to make sure.
"A year later, the pilot was taking an observer along on a repeat test flight when the pilot simply disappeared from the cockpit. Unfortunately, the observer was not an aviator, so the jet crashed. Only the body of the observer has ever been found. The pilot had totally disappeared.
"Perhaps our Zero Time Reference pulled us back again to 1983. MY BROTHER DIED IN THREE DAYS OF OLD AGE. HE HAD AGED ABOUT A YEAR AN HOUR. I guess a similar thing must have happened to me.
"You may not believe this, but secret government agencies have the ability to arrange new bodies FOR SOULS whose previous physical bodies have died. My brother's soul was introduced to a body that was born in 1951.
"EVEN IF SUCH MIND-BOGGLING TECHNOLOGY MIGHT EXIST, WHY WOULD ANY GOVERNMENT AGENCY WISH TO DO SUCH A THING?
"Bielek: For reasons that I cannot explain at this time, they cannot allow my brother or myself to die. It was arranged that I should have the body and background of Alfred Bielek, born in 1927.
"The C.I.A. and N.S.A. have all kinds of incredible technology than can work with the individual's genetic blueprint and external matrix that flows around it. They can do physical age regression - and progression.
(Note: According to certain sources, some of the para-scientific research taking place in the Dulce and other underground labs include research into the possibility of removing a soul-matrix from a human body [i.e. killing them] and inserting another soul matrix into that same body. In order for this experiment to work, it appears that someone must die in the process. No wonder the Dulce labs and other similar bio-genetic laboratories must keep their activities absolutely secret, as the Federal medical regulation agencies would literally eat them alive, and convict them on countless infringements of the Constituted laws of the United States. Some even claim that the 'organization' operating in such laboratories have little in common with the elected Constitutional Government of the U.S. As for the Dulce Facility, there is also an allegation that a human soul-matrix can be removed from a human body and replaced by an 'alien' energy matrix--possibly even malevolent 'alien' forms? In essence, the person 'dies' and his/her body is taken over by a supernatural non-human intelligence in what might be considered a more complex version of the old 'zombie' traditions - Branton)
"WHEN DID YOU BEGIN TO 'REMEMBER' THIS WHOLE INCREDIBLE STORY?
"Bielek: They had brainwashed me good, obviously intending to bury me forever. As I mentioned, I first began researching the Philadelphia Experiment in the 1960s, and I knew there was something about that film as I saw it that really jogged my memories.
"One day I walked into the home of the man I know now as my half-brother, and I said to him and some other friends gathered there, 'I was part of the Philadelphia Experiment. And so were you!'
"'We know it,' they said, 'We have just been waiting for YOU to remember.'
"AND WHAT IS NEXT FOR YOU, NOW THAT SO MANY MEMORIES APPEAR TO BE RETURNING TO YOU?
"Bielek: More research. More investigation. I want to be able to document all of this in a way that will satisfy the most skeptical.
"I am beginning to find other crew members or personnel who were associated with the experiment. They remember me and recall my involvement.
"I am gaining more proof for my story all the time..."
