Security comprimised at AOL again
The newest exploit allowed a hacker to get full access to Merlin which is AOL's users database. Merlin currently lies on AOL's internal network but the expoilt would allow you access. The hack involves tricking an AOL employee into accepting a file using Instant Messenger or uploading a Trojan horse to an AOL file library. When the file is executed, the Trojan horse connects the user who launched it to an Internet relay chat server, which the hacker can use to issue commands on the targeted machine. This allows the hacker to enter the internal AOL network and the Merlin application. Merlin requires a user ID, two passwords and a SecurID code, all of which hackers obtain by spamming the AOL employee database with phony security updates, through online password trades, or by "social engineering" attacks over IM or the telephone. The hacker who first used this exploit is said to be a 14-year-old boy. Story ripperd from here.

Office 11 Beta 2 is out... yoink!,No it isn't
It appears that Microsoft made the Office 11 Beta 2 release today and yanked it before anyone got it. One highly touted feature new to Beta 2 is junk mail filtering in Outlook. By default, Outlook 2003 examines the content of a message and relocates obvious spam e-mail to a special folder. Users can customize the filter to their liking, and even tell Outlook to instantly delete junk mail. icrosoft had previously told testers it would not make Office 11 available for download due to its large size, and beta coordinators told eager testers on Tuesday to expect Beta 2 kits by mail in the "coming weeks."

Adding to the confusion, Microsoft has not yet updated its SharePoint Team Services Web site to Beta 2 bits, as it had planned to do before the release. Beta coordinators informed testers the upgrade would occur around February 10.

The most fit IT.
The people of Laos will now be riding their computers in a sense. They are starting to receive custom-built computers -- running on bicycle-powered generators. The project, expected to launch as early as this spring, gets around the lack of phone lines through a clever application of the increasingly popular WiFi technology, which is used to wirelessly connect laptops, handhelds and other devices elsewhere.
