Las Vegas is helping tommEE not get DUI
Las Vegas Monster monorail system rolled out one of the cars Tuesday that they hope will carry 55,000 passengers a day between the Las Vegas Convention Center and hotel-casinos. They are selling advertisers display space on the nine trains and seven stations, and say the system can break even with fares averaging $2.50 per trip from 20 million passengers a year. The monorail will be free for passengers but for the advertisers the asking price for station advertising is $2 million. I hope it is ready for tommEE pickles' BirthdayCON 2004. More news here.

Ok time is getting close and we are getting ready for the journey.
It's time for the 2nd Annual Defcon Cannonball Run. We are set to leave in 14 days!

What is the Defcon Cannonball Run?
It is a race from Redondo Beach to the Alexis Park Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada

Why are you doing it?
In 1981 in the movie 'The Cannonball Run" the teams ended up finishing at Kings Harbor, Redondo Beach. In 1984, in the movie "Cannonball Run II" the teams started in Redondo Beach and finished in Boston.

But why are you finishing in Las Vegas?
Well thats where defcon is... duh.

How is this going to work?
All the people who want to participate will meet at Joes Crab Shack (230 Portofino Way, Redondo Beach, CA) and listen to the disclaimers. The racing teams will all get a time card. When it is the teams time to leave, they will punch the time card in the time clock and race their vehicle to the Alexis Park where there will be another time clock in the bar of the hotel. The total time will be the difference between the two times. The winner will be the team with the quickest time.

What does the winner get?
That is up for debate right now. Last year we decided that a $5 donation from each team member would go to the pot and then the winner team would get that back in the form of a bar tab for the drinking that goes after the race. Again, we are debating this and probably will decide when we all gather. There will be a couple of t-shirt and other give-aways.

Where can I see all the rules and other stuff?

Symantec dropping the rootkit on you
I have used Symantec Security Check in the past. It is a tool to look for virii and back doors along with exploits. What it wasn't telling you was it also has been installing an on-line threat of its own in the form of a dangerous ActiveX control. "The ActiveX control, named Symantec RuFSI Utility Class or Symantec RuFSI Registry Information Class, contains a buffer overflow exploit," the company says, though we're nearly certain they mean that it's exploitable, not that it's actually been infected with something. The easiest way to get rid of the dangerous ActiveX control that security experts Symantec have planted on your machine is to visit the Security Check Web page again, submit to the security check once more, and allow them to install a much better one in its place, which they are now prepared to do or you can go to a DOS prompt and delete the file rufsi.dll from the %Windir%\Downloaded Program Files. I am glad I waited for my upgrade
Dell has now found the problem in the Axim PDA. Users were complaining about a slowness in applications with the Dell Axim with Pocket PC 2003 vs. Axim with Pocket PC 2002. Dell is stating that it is not a problem with Pocket PC 2003 itself. The new upgrade for Dell users began shipping June 23 but has been taken off of the website for the last several weeks. I don't know if it is a related issue but I am glad I didn't order it on the phone yesterday, The company will continue to take Axim orders. However, it will not ship any new Axim units or offer a planned Windows Mobile 2003 for Pocket PC software update for Axims currently running Pocket PC 2002 until the fix is available. It's funny. 4:30 in the morning, the net is really sluggish and I see news...
Cisco warned Internet service providers and corporations late Wednesday that a flaw in its router software could allow attackers to freeze Cisco routers and stop the flow of network data through the devices. Cisco didn't initially comment on the issue. Late Wednesday, the company posted details of the flaw in an advisory on its Web site. Basically the Cisco IOS has a bug in it which a user may send packets that can lock up the appliance. The router would stay down until rebooted. Earlier on Wednesday, ISPs were scrambling to schedule maintenance time for their networks. Messages posted to a network administrator's mailing list indicated that AT&T, Level 3, Cogent Communications and Sprint had all warned customers of upcoming maintenance.

Walmart.com Offers a New Linux PC

Microtel PC features SuSE OS and OpenOffice suite.
PC shoppers visiting Wal-Mart Stores' online shop will find a new PC on offer with a bundle of preloaded open source software products from SuSE Linux.
SuSE has teamed with Microtel Computer Systems to offer a range of PCs preloaded with SuSE's 8.2 operating system software and numerous other office and entertainment applications, the Nuremberg, Germany, software vendor said in a statement Monday.
Prices for the computers start at $298. The products are immediately available on the U.S. retailer's Web site at WalMart.com.
For SuSE, this is a first not only with Microtel, which designs, manufacturers, and customizes computers, but also with Wal-Mart, one of the biggest retailers in the U.S., Egle said. "The deal with Wal-Mart is very important to us because it opens the door to the huge U.S. consumer market," he said.

Here goes the rant again
There is a story on
Hack in the Box
, titled "Walk-By Hacking". It discusses the same tired story of wardriving or warchalking. The reason why this bugs me is because Wardriving and Warchalking are not hacking. It takes no skill to find open Access Points. There are 2 open access points that will come up if you Wardrive my office but this doesn't mean you can get on any of them. Just think of it wardriving is 50% driving, driving isn't hacking. The other 50% is spent listening to a laptop going "bing".
