Microsoft Windows Media - Windows Media Player 10 Technical Beta
A little too late?Sun Microsystems, one of the biggest names in the server world, reported
that the company will now make Solaris an open source project. Sun is not
sure as to when the move of making Solaris open source will take place at
this point.
According to various online reports, this move was expected from Sun
Microsystems. Sun has not disclosed its licensing models for its
server-level operating system.
Sun views this as an open opportunity to expand Solaris just like the
company did with its Java platform. According to the company's CEO, Jonathan
Schwartz, Java could not have been successful if only Sun was supporting it.
Java is what it is today with the help of thousands of supporting partners.
Sun will be very aggressive in its pricing model against Red Hat and
Microsoft. The company's new plan will be 80% lower, in terms of pricing,
than Microsoft's offerings to the server and enterprise world.
Sun Microsystems did report a fear with making Solaris open source. The
company said, it doesn't want Solaris to turn into different distributions
of Linux, hinting Red Hat. Sun stated that they do not want application
incompatibilities with Solaris.
Sun is not expecting to make much revenue from Solaris, but the company
reported that they will earn high profits from its services, hardware,
storage, and support features
