I was recently doing a little exploring at my college and found that most
departments throw all paper waste into big recycling cans in the hallways.  So of
course I decided to look in one of the bins near the registrars/bursers office.
Apparently, they were clearing out last years files, and I now have the
transcripts, bills, SS#'s, addresses and full names of over 500 students that
are currently attending the university.  Photocopies of checks and drivers
licences were also found.  Never shredded, and pretty scary.  Then I went to the
Dean's office and found account numbers, phone directories, memos about students
and teachers, promotion requests, etc.  I have the SS# and address of the
Associate Dean, along with his transcripts from when he went to college (they
were throwing out his application materials).  Next door to the Dean's office is
the payroll department, and they were throwing out memos listing the payscales
of all the teachers working there.  This document included all their SS#'s of
course. Other assorted memos were less interesting, but still should have been
shredded.  No computer manuals or anything, but it was very frightening that not
one thing in any of these bins was shredded.  I now have two large boxes sitting
here full of stuff that could get the university in very deep trouble
(confidential memos, etc.).  Not bad for three hours worth of trashing, and I
didn't have to get dirty either!  Summer is the time many of these universities
clear out old documents, and by dressing up respectively (polo and khakis people)
you most likely will not get questioned about what you are doing.  Very
interesting trashing site overall.
