// The OSP Reference Model // // by dual_parallel // // http://www.oldskoolphreak.com NOTE: This is a DRAFT working paper. Much like the seven layers of the ISO OSI model, the OSP - Open Systems Phreaking - model is a four-layer abstraction of the levels of access that a phreak can encounter. The layers are as follows: 4. Switching - switch control/exploration, loop/test lines 3. Private - voice mail or PBX access 2. Operator - diversion/exploration with access codes, live operators 1. Transmission - beige boxing, line splicing, line piercing An obvious acronym emerges from the model: SPOT. A convenient mnemonic could be "Same Phreak, Other Trunk." How can this model be useful? Being a working draft, the complete usefulness of the OSP model has yet to be explored. Here are two possibilities. - Can be used as a code Ex. "I've got a Layer 3 number for you." - Can describe levels of access as one delves into different numbers/systems Ex. Using a Layer 2 number for anonymous Layer 3 access As can be plainly seen, access becomes increasingly rare, and risky, as one ascends the OSP model. Take care with Layer 4, and please feel free to contribute to the OSP model by contacting dual [at] oldskoolphreak [dot] com.
