** 1. Introduction **
************************
This text file will be a comprehensive directory of all things phreak at
the great devil of consumerism, Wal-Mart. This will be an ongoing project,
continually growing and adapting. We will begin with information about
store classification.
Wal-Mart officially recognizes four store categories: Discount Stores,
Supercenters, SAM'S CLUBS and Neighborhood Markets (Wal-Mart 2003 Annual
Report). From input from hackers around the US and Canada, we believe
there are actually six types of Wal-Mart stores. We are not considering
SAM'S CLUB warehouse stores, although they are definitely a part of this
lopsided equation.
As stated, Wal-Mart stores are grouped into six categories, which are
listed below. The first five categories are listed by increasing size.
1. Neighborhood Market - essentially a grocery store with an Electronics
cubby hole
2. Hometown Store - exact opposite of a Neighborhood Market; general
merchandise (GM) with snacks and milk
3. Hometown Supercenter - a Hometown Store with groceries, sans Deli,
Bakery and the like; longer hours
4. Supercenter - full GM side, full grocery side with Bakery, Deli and
seafood department, and "subdomains" like Optometrist,
Salon, etc.; generally open 24 hours
5. "Soulsucker" Supercenter
These "SS" stores are built in key markets and in large suburban
areas. This is the new style of Supercenter built after 2001.
They are a whopping 186,000 square feet. These are a derivation of
a failed Wal-Mart venture, Hyper-Mart.
A Hyper-Mart was a store where you could go and get ANYTHING. It
was a failed attempt to shed their low-class stigma. Since,
Wal-Mart has returned to their white-trash roots, building and
indenturing whole communities.
The sixth type of store is not open to the public. It is called the Sample
Store and these stores sell damaged Wal-Mart goods at reduced prices to
Wal-Mart employees only.
Now that you know what you're up against, on to the phreak info.

** 2. Wal-Mart Phreaking **
****************************
To make free calls from your Wal-Mart, head to the service desk and ask to
use their phone. Now, if you try to dial a local number, it will go right
through. But if you try to make a long distance call, it will prompt you,
"Please enter passcode." There is a workaround. Simply call information -
1-411. You will then be greeted by Darth Vader, or your respective telco,
and when asked to press "1" to place the call, do it. Your call will go
through, gratis.
Inter-store calling is relatively simple at your favorite Wal-Mart. Find
a secluded phone, most likely hanging on a column, and grab a line by
pressing an extension button or "9" on a 2554-type phone. Then dial
1-700-701-XXXX where XXXX is the store number. For example, for Store #1
in Rogers, AR, dial 1-700-701-0001.
The first documented long distance call using Wal-Mart inter-store calling
was completed Sunday, February 13, 2005. dual_parallel, calling from the
southwestern United States, paged ArchAngel in a Wal-Mart on the east
coast.
Using the paging system at your local Wal-Mart is as easy as pushing the
clearly marked button on any of the phones hanging throughout the store.
There is a slight delay between pressing the Paging button and getting a
hot mic, so be patient. And make sure you use the opportunity to pass on a
meaningful message to everyone in the store:
"Attention consumers. The products you buy here at Wal-Mart are
made with sweatshop labor. Thank you."
"Attention associates. You are underpaid and overworked by
design."
"Attention Wal-Mart shoppers. We destroy family-owned businesses
so you can have low prices. Always."
Speak slowly and clearly and use an extra-cheery voice. You can also have
Customer Service make an announcement over the PA system. Although you'll
probably only get a "Name-to-Department" page out of the Associate, you can
still use this opportunity for jamming. Having Lee Scott meet his party in
Layaway is much more creative and entertaining coming from one of his own
employees.
Update: Phone systems without marked Paging buttons are reported to use
extensions #03 or #96.

Or more appropriately, own Wal-Mart shoppers by finding a gift registry
kiosk and completing the three following very complicated steps:
1. Select "Update A Registry."
2. Enter First and Last names. Choose common names like Linda Smith or
Roberto Gonzales. If there are more than 50 matches, you'll have to
narrow down your search.
3. Choose a name from the list and enter "1234" as the PIN. If that
particular name doesn't work, try another from the list. In the
unlikely even that one from the list doesn't work, start over and
try another banal name.
4. Write down all of the personal information in your phreak notebook.
Don't change any information, nor act upon information gained.
These instructions are for the store kiosks only. The web-based gift
registry has not been explored, and it can be found at the following

** 9. Wal-Mart RFID **

Wal-Mart is?one of the foremost supporters of the use of Radio Frequency
Identifcation (RFID) technology. Wal-Mart's pure economic size affords it
the capability to create an industry and force other industries to use a
certain technology. And it has essentially done this with RFID.
On April 30, 2004, Wal-Mart began to recieve pallets of product marked
with RFID Electronic Product Codes (EPC), which will be tracked to end
points within the state of Texas. Wal-Mart is requiring its top 100
suppliers to use the technology by 2005.
(Note: Simon Langford is the Manager of RFID Strategies at Wal-Mart.)
Specifically, Wal-Mart uses a company by the name of Intermec
(http://www.intermec.com/) for its RFID (and other) needs. The Wal-Mart
account is so large at Intermec that Intermec has built an entirely new
facility to accomodate Wal-Mart's needs. An example of Wal-Mart's

As of May 2004, Wal-Mart will be building 42 new, 90,000 sq. ft.
Supercenters within the next 12 months. This new style of Supercenter
holds as much product as the previous layout that was aprroximately twice
the size (~200,000 sq. ft.).
San Antonio, Texas is home to the test market of the Wal-Mart Used Car Lot.
Albuquerque, New Mexico is home to the first reported Appliance Center
(washers, dryers, refrigerators).
Wal-Mart will begin its urban assault in 2005 by opening a store in
Chicago.
