// Ultimate Beige Box // // by dual_parallel // // http://www.oldskoolphreak.com I haven't created a new box, but I have improved your everyday beige box, integrating an additional feature while minimizing size. I'll discuss the materials needed to create the UBB, including exact RadioShack part numbers, the tools you'll need and how to build it. The UBB begins with the RadioShack Mini Flip Phone (1). It's a small silver phone that accomodates a 2.5mm headset. These phones are $9.99, so if the Shack you go to has them for any higher price, raise hell. Next, you'll need an RJ-11 coupler (2). Also pick up a 12" mod-to-spade line cord (3) and some aligator clips (4). If you don't have RJ-11 plugs, pick some up (5) and get some electrical tape too. Finally, the integrated feature - a line status indicator, $12.99 (6). The tools are basic, so you probably have them already. You'll need wire cutters/strippers, a small phillips screwdriver and a mod plug crimper (7). To make the UBB: Take the flip phone and cut the cord in half to reduce bulk. Strip the cord and crimp on a new plug. Take the line cord and cut off the black and yellow wires, then put aligator clips on the the red and green wires. Now, take the line status indicator and clip off the pig tail flush against the case. Remove the sticker from the bottom and remove the screws. Pry out the PCB, throw out the case and remove any silicone. Strip whats left of the pig tail and crimp on a plug. Wrap up the loose wires with electrical tape. Now put it all together. Connect the line cord with the clips and the pig tail from the line status indicator with the coupler. Finally, plug the phone into the indicator RJ-11 jack. Test and enjoy. The UBB is small and if you've noticed, modular, so you can use the parts for any other box. The flip phone already has good features and the light just adds another. Wrap it up with a rubber band, throw it in your pocket and beige box the night away. (1) 43-3207 (2) 279-459 (3) 279-391 (4) 270-346 (5) 279-384 (6) 43-443 (7) 279-388
