Jason Mewhiney, aka tr0ut, is a Canadian hacker; He is currently on trial in Sudbury, Canada on charges for breaking into NASA, two years ago, then defacing their Web site. (Please note: The term "hacker" is not used as a reference to a criminal, you may even consider him a cracker. There are so many "terms" around now. We found it to be an appropriate term.)
Mewhiney, from Val Caron (near Sudbury), was arrested one year ago this week. He faces 99 criminal charges.
NASA claims that Mewhiney's supposed actions cost them $70,000(US) in damage that took 200 man-hours to repair.
Each charge carries a maximum of 10 years in prison and large fines. If convicted, Mewhiney will most likely face an 18 month jail-term.
A hacking group, The Yorkshire Posse, has recently defaced several large sites including Playboy.com, SonyMusic.com, OReilly.com, and several other sites speaking for Mewhiney.
