PRO-92 Tutorial: Weather Band and WX Alert

The PRO-92 Scanner has three weather functions. In addition to Tuning and Listening to the WX (Weather) Band, this scanner also has two alert modes (SAME Standby Mode, and Priority WX Alert Mode) that monitor the weather channel and indicate when an alert signal is received.

The SAME Standby mode puts the scanner in standby mode to conserve power and monitors the weather channel only. When it receives a weather alert signal, it sounds the alert tones and displays the alert message. While in SAME Standby mode, the scanner cannot be used for scanning.

If you want to monitor the weather channel while you are scanning, you would need to use the Priority WX Alert mode. This sets the weather channel as the priority channel, which is checked every 2 seconds while scanning other frequencies. When the scanner detects a weather alert signal, it stops scanning, sounds the alert tones, and displays the alert message. If you want to delete this setting, you would need to Remove the Priority Setting from the Weather Channel.

Please note: The Priority WX Alert feature only works when scanning conventional frequencies and will not work when scanning trunked frequencies. It is not possible for this scanner to scan trunked frequencies and monitor the weather channel.

Tune and Listen to the WX (Weather) Band

Tune and Listen to the Weather Band

PRO-92 WX-7 162.5500 PRO-92 Keypad - WX

Press WX to hear your local forecast and regional weather information. The scanner scans through the weather bands for a few seconds, and then stops on the strongest weather broadcast. Our example shows the weather channel as 7 and the frequency is 162.5500 MHz. The channel number is shown after Weather on the third row of the display and after WX- in the top left of the display, and NOAA Weather is displayed at the bottom of the screen.

Information on the weather broadcast station and/or the channel number for your area is on the NOAA National Weather Radio website.

Use the SAME Standby Mode

The weather service starts each weather alert with a digitally-encoded SAME (Specific Area Message Encoding) signal. You can set the scanner in standby mode to decode and display the SAME message when an alert is broadcast.

Note: While the SAME code carries the alert or message type and duration, and the area affected, the PRO-92 scanner will only decode the alert or message type. It is not possible to set the SAME code(s) for your area on this scanner.

Step 1: Select the Weather Channel

PRO-92 Keypad - WX

First, you need to Tune and Listen to the WX (Weather) Band.

Press WX to select the weather channel you want to program as the priority channel. As in the example in Tuning and Listening to the WX (Weather) Band, we are using weather channel 7 at 162.5500 MHz. The channel number is shown after Weather on the third line of the display and after WX- in the top left of the display, and NOAA Weather is displayed at the bottom of the screen.

Step 2: Select SAME Standby Mode

Pro-92 WX DIG WX STBY Pro-92 Keypad - Func, WX

Once you are listening to the weather band, press FUNC then WX to put the scanner in SAME Standby mode. DIG WX STBY and Cancel: F+WX appear on the bottom two rows of the display. The scanner is now in standby mode. It will remain in standby mode until it detects a SAME signal, which it will decode and then display the alert message.

Information on the SAME functions is available in our Basic Operation of Weatheradios[../doc67/67057.htm - MISSING] document, as well as on the National Weather Radio Alarms page.

Step 3: Cancel SAME Standby Mode

Press FUNC then WX to cancel SAME standby mode. DIG WX STBY and Cancel: F+WX disappear and are replaced by Weather and the channel number on the third row and NOAA Weather on the fourth row.

Use the Priority WX Alert Mode

In order to scan conventional frequencies and monitor the weather channel for your area, you will need to use the Priority WX mode. When the scanner is in this mode, it monitors the weather channel every two seconds and will sound an alert when it receives an alert signal on that weather channel.

Note: This feature will not work when scanning trunked frequencies. It is not possible to scan trunked frequencies and monitor the weather channel.

Step 1: Select the Weather Channel

To set this channel as the priority channel, press FUNC, then PRI. Pri appears to the right of the frequency. Now, when you scan for conventional frequencies, the scanner will also check the weather frequency every 2 seconds for an alert.

Remove the Priority Setting from the Weather Channel

If you want to scan conventional frequencies without monitoring the weather channel, you will need to remove the priority setting from that channel. To do this, you will need to select the channel and then remove the setting, as shown below:

Step 1: Select the Priority Channel

Pri will be at the end of the second line on the display for the channel which has the priority setting.

Step 2: Remove the Priority Setting
