Chlorinated swimming pools are the main reason contributing to the epidemic of allergic diseases affecting the westernized world, a new study finds.

According to the study published in Pediatrics, swimming in a chlorinated pool places susceptible children at an increased risk of developing asthma and allergies.

The increased risk of such respiratory problems, however, was not reported among those swimming in copper-silver sanitized pools and children without allergic tendencies.

Chlorine-based products found in the water and air of swimming pools are believed to irritate the airways of swimmers, making them more vulnerable to developing asthma and respiratory allergies such as hay fever and allergic rhinitis.

"The impact of these chemicals on the respiratory health of children and adolescents appears to be much more important -- at least by a factor of five -- than that associated with secondhand smoke," said lead researcher Alfred Bernard.

Scientists concluded that swimming in chlorinated pools for more than 100 hours increased the likelihood of asthma and respiratory allergies in children with allergic sensitivities by 2.2 to 3.5 times.
