A ‘Jews' street’ renamed ‘Dead end of Pilgrims’ in France

PARIS (EJP)---The National Bureau of Vigilance Against Anti-Semitism (BNVCA) has protested against the “unhealthy decision” taken by the Mayor and the municipal council of Loye-en-Arnon, to rename the ‘Jew’s Street’.
The street was renamed “Dead end of the Pilgrims”.
The BNCVA has received several complaints from people shocked by the decision taken on September 20.
According to a resident of this commune, who alerted the International League Against Racism and Anti-Semitism (LICRA), this measure was taken because “people are afraid to be vandalized because they live in the Jew's Street".
“Its inadmissible to be still afraid of the word Jewish in 2009.”
“The arguments of the Mayor did not convinced the general secretary of the LICRA who protested”, the BNVCA said.
The organization, which monitors anti-Semitism in France, called on the Prefect of the department, the region's most senior official, to use his authority to cancel the decision and to restore the situation.
“We consider that erasing the name of this street also means erasing the memory of the Jews who lived in this commune and were in their majority victims of anti-Semitism.”
