Split Mayor and controversial entrepreneur Zeljko Kerum founded a new political party, Hrvatska gradjanska stranka (Croatian Civil Party) today (Fri) in Split.

The founding session took place in front of numerous guests at Kerum’s Sky restaurant at his shopping centre Joker.

In his ceremonial speech, Kerum proudly said his party would be third in the next Croatian parliamentary election in 2011 because the main two political parties, the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) and the Social Democratic Party (SDP), were losing their influence and strength.

Kerum stressed the new party would not just be his party but one for all Croats, especially young people who had never been involved in politics.

Kerum said the new party would have excellent results if a parliamentary election were held now.

The Split mayor has often been in conflict with local journalists who have covered his business and political moves
