Al Qassam Website/Agencies - The committee representing families of detainees in Abbas's jails said Friday in a press release that the mistreatment of detainees talked about in the Guardian was really the tip of iceberg.
The committee, however, expressed appreciation that these human rights abuses are being talked about by a western paper lamenting the fact that local and Arab media ignore the suffering of the detainees and their families.
The committee also said that the past two weeks have witnessed an escalation in terms of numbers arrested and in terms of the barbarity of torture methods used by Abbas's interrogators.
The committee added that it was important to point out the following facts:
1- The number of people detained by the "Fatah's" agencies in the West Bank are 675 in various West Bank jails.
2- 400 were kidnapped by Abbas's agencies in the past two weeks to prevent Hamas from celebrating its 22nd anniversary.
3- Since the start of December 2009 Fatah's agencies have summoned more than 4000 Hamas cadres and supporters for interrogation.
4- Interrogators forced all those summoned to sign a statement saying that they will not participate in celebrations of Hamas's anniversary.
The committee added that detainees have to sign statements that they will not file law suits before their release and that amongst the detainees there are 35 minors.
The committee also pointed out that Shabah was not the only torture method used against detainees, other methods include: sleep deprivation, whipping, beating with truncheons, electric shock, stripping and pouring cold water over the detainee, not to mention depriving detainees of family visits.
In addition to these torture methods, the committee said that wives of detainees were also detained to put pressure on detainees to cooperate. The wives themselves were tortured, abused and threatened to pressure their husbands.
The committee pointed out that [local] human rights organisations are often threatened in order not to expose rampant torture in Abbas's jails.
The statement was concluded by pointing out that in many cases those who were tortured during their detention in Abbas's jails ended up with permanent disabilities.
