99.9% of these skateboarding numb nuts don't have any idea what the symbol represents. The same goes for most of the bikers that incorporated NS regalia into their sub-culture, most did it just to piss people off. The iron cross has lost any potency it might of had left in the mainstream because of this commercial exploitation.

Pupils not associated with 311 Boyz say school's clothing restriction unfair

A group of Centennial High School students meets Monday morning to protest the school's ban on the Iron Cross symbol. One teen, center, wears a popular West Coast Choppers T-shirt with the symbol.

They risked detention and the possibility of a required parent conference for the sake of popular fashion and their desire for free expression.

At 6:30 a.m. Monday, a small group of Centennial High School students gathered to denounce last week's ban on the Iron Cross symbol at the campus in the northwest valley. Cimarron-Memorial High School also has outlawed the symbol in its dress code.

Best known as a German military award for bravery in the 19th and 20th centuries, the Iron Cross has evolved into a graphic design used by clothing manufacturers such as Independent, West Coast Choppers and No Fear, brands preferred by those who espouse the skateboard and motocross culture.

At Centennial, the blocky symbol that evolved from the Maltese cross is newly known as a gang sign for the 311 Boyz, a group of middle- to upper-class teens whom police say carried out a series of beatings in the northwest valley. At least one incident being investigated by police involves the beating of a minority.

"Why punish us for something we didn't do?" said Centennial Junior Valina Rivera, who likes the clothes and says she has no connection to the gang. "It's stupid."

Witnesses have told police that 311 is a reference to the Ku Klux Klan, a white supremacist group against anyone who is not Caucasian and Protestant. K is the 11th letter in the alphabet, and three K's makes 311, the witnesses have said.

But Centennial students not affiliated with the 311 Boyz said that the ban unfairly assumes that anyone wearing the symbol embraces the same view. That's why more than a dozen students came to school early to protest and defy the ban.

"It doesn't mean anything," said Centennial junior Matt Renincky, who was wearing a T-shirt with the banned cross printed on the back. "It just irritates me. I work seven days a week to pay for my car and my insurance. I buy my own clothes. I don't have the money to go out and buy all new clothes."

Kelly Porter, who has gathered 400 student signatures on a petition to revoke the cross ban, came to school dressed in a red Independent T-shirt and a belt decorated with the symbols.

While other students were allowed to cover the logos with masking tape, Porter, a junior at the forefront of the ban backlash, was given detention by school administrators and sent home to change her clothes. She doesn't regret her defiance and said it was her way of protesting an injustice.

"I am not a racist," said Porter. "The school has definitely labeled us."

Assistant Northwest Region Superintendent Billie Rayford stressed that the decision to make the Iron Cross a dress code violation springs from a concern for student safety. Students wearing the symbols could be in danger if a different gang mistakes them for members of the 311 Boyz. And students who see the symbol may feel threatened by those who wear it.

"We see this as a precautionary measure on both sides so that students won't be targeted," Rayford said. "The safety of the kids is our main concern."

American Civil Liberties Union of Nevada attorney Allen Lichtenstein said the courts give public schools considerable leeway in banning things that either cause disruptions or pose a threat to student safety. But symbols can't be banned simply because the district doesn't approve of the message, he said.

Rabbi Richard Schachet of the Valley Outreach Synagogue suggested that students think seriously about the message behind the symbol. Yes, it was a symbol of valor to the Germans, he said.

"But who were the ones they gave it to?" Schachet asked. "Those who murdered the Jews. Those who murdered the gypsies. Those who murdered the homosexuals. Is that the symbol you really want to use to represent yourself?"

its obvious that the popularity of the iron cross, right now, is in no small part due to the success of the discovery program Orange County Choppers or whatever the fuckall it's called. I see these tshirts everywhere. It is as much a white working class tribal signifier as nascar or harley davidson.

The motion aspect, makes it a perennial favorite for advertising logos. If you look around you at daily graphic designs, you will start to see many swazilike designs.

I too am seeing this symbol being worn by white youth everywhere. Just remember the incredible power of symbols on the human mind; this particular symbol could become very useful to us once again in the future. I have a belt that has the iron cross on it and I wear it to work occasionally. It is an "independent trucking" belt but its meaning to me and why I wear it is for other reasons....(obviously).

I work around a lot of different people every day and the one day I wore it I had two jews ask me about it. One asked me if I knew what it represented and also told me that I looked like a good person and shouldnt want to wear it.
The other one saw it and shunned me.

I felt the effects it had on jews that day so it is definatly something that they dont like.

As for kids....they have no clue. Its a trend and it will fade like the rest...its unfortunate. My son has quite a few things with iron cross's on it right now. Its a coolness thing. He knows about it but his friends dont and even the ones he tells are still a little oblivious to it all.

I always ask these morons if they actually know what that cross really means and 99% say no so I tell them.

It was a Colombian flag of another type that led to the freshman's suspension from Freedom High School earlier this week. She was upset that classmate Juan Balcazar was suspended for refusing to hand over his Colombian flag when a teacher confronted him about displaying it on a backpack.
The 13-year-old Cardenas protested with friends by wearing hand-drawn flags on their shirts, which led to a disturbance in the cafeteria. Cardenas and four friends were suspended, but Cardenas' punishment and that of three others was reversed Thursday.
