FDA approves rosuvastatin (Crestor) for the primary prevention of cardiovascular disease, making it the first statin recommended to be used in healthy individuals.

Many studies have pointed out the fact that more than half of the patients who experience heart attacks or other cardiovascular problems have normal blood cholesterol levels.

Men aged 50 or older along with women aged 60 or older who have fasting LDL of less than 130 mg/dL, a sensitive C-reactive protein of 2.0 mg/L or greater, triglyceride levels of less than 500 mg/dL, and no prior history of heart attack or stroke, or coronary heart disease risk should take rosuvastatin, FDA stated.

The cholesterol lowering drug has shown promising results in lowering not only the blood LDL levels but also the risk of cardiovascular events and related deaths.

According to the report, muscle pain and diabetes mellitus, the main adverse effects of rosuvastatin, were also reported in those taking other types of statins.

FDA officials concluded that rosuvastatin can be used as a preventative measure for cardiovascular disease even in healthy individuals with no heart symptoms.

I take two capsules (600mg each) of Red Yeast Rice twice a day, one capsule (500mg) of Niacin three times a day, and one gel capsule three times a day of Omega 3 fish oils. Will have my cholesterol rechecked in about four months to see how well these are working.

Red yeast rice is the product of yeast ( Monascus purpureus ) grown on rice, and is served as a dietary staple in some Asian countries. It contains several compounds collectively known as monacolins, substances known to inhibit cholesterol synthesis. One of these, "monacolin K," is a potent inhibitor of HMG-CoA reductase, and is also known as mevinolin or lovastatin (MevacorŪ, a drug produced by Merck & Co., Inc). I'm a big fan of cod liver oil (omega 3, vitamins d and a). Not taking them for specifically cardiovascular issues, just general health. What is red yeast for? I know niacin is for heart, but I'm not really familiar with it. I know it makes some people "flush."

BTW, I misread the title of this thread. I though it was "Stalin." :)

All three of the supplements I mentioned above are for the lowering of my cholesterol level including the red yeast rice. Did you read the quote and link I provided from the Mayo Clinic?

Niacin can also reduce cholesterol levels. Niaspan, a trademarked drug, is an extended release form of Niacin.

No, I missed the link completely! Thanks.

so why the hell take a statin if it's in the red yeast? is that yeast expensive?

I take statin medicine, but I also use co-Q enzyme which is supposed to build up something important that statins reduce... not sure the details, but it makes me feel better. CO-Q is very expensive but you can easily shoplift it like I do.

Yep. That's the idea. You used at least 40 points on the above statement of your 65 IQ.
