Fernando Cooper, 31, of Hazel Crest, was formally charged with six counts of aggravated battery to a peace officer and one count each of disarming a peace officer and aggravated battery, according to Cook County State's Attorney's office spokesman Andy Conklin. He was ordered held on $500,000 bond on Jan. 19.
Cooper will appear for arraignment Feb. 26, Conklin said. About 9:30 p.m. on Jan. 17, the off-duty officer became involved in a dispute with Cooper outside Gibsons Bar and Steakhouse at 1028 N. Rush St., according to a police report.
Near North District officers in the area saw a disturbance and struggle, during which the officer identified himself as police but Cooper allegedly continued to refuse commands. He then bit the officer, prompting responding officers to deploy a chemical spray, the report said.
The officer suffered swelling and cuts to his eye, along with a severe bite to the chest. An ambulance transported the officer to Northwestern Memorial Hospital where he was treated by a doctor, who later said the victim lost a body part (nipple) because of the bite, according to the report.
Cooper suffered cuts and bruising to the face and was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center for treatment, the report said.
During the struggle, Cooper allegedly grabbed the officer's holster, according to the report. After several attempts, he was eventually placed into custody.http://abclocal.go.com/wls/story?section=news/local&id=7272118
