I've been doing this for a couple of days now. I like it a lot. Instead of sitting on my butt four hours a day, and only moving every half hour or so, now I stand for four hours a day and rarely just sit on my butt.

Plus, if I'm listening to a video that doesn't require my visual attention, I naturally walk about a bit in my office.

I highly recommend this.

Incidentally, the small coffee table I've put on my desk (just a cheap office table) was made by my dad about 35 years ago. He chopped down an Ash tree that was about to be uprooted by age. He made the boards in his workshop and made the coffee table for me. My mom hated it. It's bulky and kind of well...over strong. Thanks dad.

Late edit: Just by luck, this is exactly the perfect height for me. Typing is easier than it was when I sat before the laptop. I'm 6'. If you want to do this, you may need to adjust the height. I got lucky and the height is perfect.

(I don't know why I put this in gard. and diet. Do we have a forum for general fitness?)

Another good idea is to get one of those swiss balls and use it as a chair. It engages your "core" a lot more.

The last place I worked had a couple o guys who did that. They were both very fit rock climbers.

Anything that can provide an automatic advantage in fitness...standing at the computer, sitting on a yoga ball in your office...all good.

I believe there are a number of artifacts of modern Kwan life that are producing the thoughtless, dumb, bubble butts that infect the Kwa.

* Crap for food. I am 6' tall and about 197 pounds, hardly obese, but I should be about 185. I get in line at the supermarket and often there is a family of dinosaurs ahead of me. I swear I've seen kids 8 or 9 years old that dwarf me. The shopping carts are always full to the brim...sometimes two or more carts, all full...and I can't see any food. Hundreds of boxes of gods-know-what, and dozens of 2 liter bottles of diet drink. Pure crap, but that's what these giantasaurses eat. 10 year old kids with Adult type II diabetes.

* No one walks, we drive every where. People will park in front of one store at the mall and shop. Then they will get into their car and drive to the end of the same mall to shop there.

* We sit too much. I read an on-line article (looking for it, couldn't find it today) that said that when you sit for a time your metabolism changes in some weird way, that fucks your body up. I've worked at jobs where people actually sat for 8 or more hours a day, without getting up more than once or twice. For a person under, say 50, it may be possible to survive this by exercising on off-time, but for anyone over 50, this is suicide.

Here is an example of research showing that sitting too long is very bad for you.

Some quotes:

"Scientists are increasingly warning that sitting for prolonged periods — even if you also exercise regularly — could be bad for your health. And it doesn't matter where the sitting takes place — at the office, at school, in the car or before a computer or TV — just the overall number of hours it occurs."

' "After four hours of sitting, the body starts to send harmful signals," Ekblom-Bak said. She explained that genes regulating the amount of glucose and fat in the body start to shut down. Even for people who exercise, spending long stretches of time sitting at a desk is still harmful.'
