Teaching stroke victims to sing can help them recover their speech through substituting their speech center, a new study finds.

Previous studies had reported that the left side of the brain is mainly responsible for talking as well as controlling movements and hearing; those suffering from damage on this side of their brain following a stroke, therefore, have difficulty in speaking.

By singing, patients whose speech center is damaged by stroke learn to use a different area of the brain for talking, the study presented at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) in San Diego found.

"Music might be an alternative medium to engage parts of the brain that are otherwise not engaged," said lead researcher Gottfried Schlaug.

According to the study conducted by Harvard Medical School in Boston, the brain responds well to this "melodic intonation therapy", suggesting that it may be an effective strategy to improve the quality of life in stroke patients in the near future.
