Stern made a surprise call to KGO-AM radio in San Francisco while Michael Powell was a studio guest Tuesday.

"How did you get your job?" Stern asked. "It is apparent to most of us in broadcasting that your father got you your job, and you kind of sit there and you're the judge, you're the arbiter, you're the one who tells us what we can and can't say on the air."

Stern added, "I really don't even think you're qualified to be the head of the commission."

WASHINGTON -- Secretary of State Colin Powell defended his son, Federal Communications Commission Chairman Michael Powell, after radio personality Howard Stern said the younger Powell only got the job because of his family name. Colin Powell labeled the accusation ''just so much nonsense.''

''My son is an enormously qualified individual, and I think he has served -- if I may say so as a father and as a not so distant observer -- with great distinction,'' Powell said Wednesday on CNBC.

Stern's raunchy radio show has brought repeated fines by the FCC and he routinely rails against what he says is the Bush administration's desire to use the FCC to stifle free speech on radio and TV.

Stern called KGO-AM radio in San Francisco while Michael Powell was a studio guest Tuesday and told him "your father got you your job." Michael Powell called Stern's remark "a cheap shot."

Powell, a Republican, was appointed to the commission by President Bill Clinton in 1997 and became chairman when President Bush took office in 2001.

Stern makes some good points. There in no clear definition on what is obscene or not other than a few words. The FCC can crack down on opposing speech on the radio (and elsewhere) if it is critical of the political power structure at the time.

I suppose what is obscene is in the eyes of the beholder. The bulk of Stern's listening audience is professional whites, which is a very coveted demographic group. Not everyone is going to appreciate his show, point of view, or humor.

The DC metro area has the second worst traffic congestion in the United States. My commute is usually and hour and a half one way. Sometimes I'll listen to his show and at times find it entertaining.

At any rate the market should dictate availability of a product or a certain radio show.

I do have to say that I do not advocate any type of censorship. It is easy enough if you don't want to see or hear something to not listen to it or watch it.

Certainly his show is not for everyone. Most jewish comedians I do not find funny. I hate Al Frankenfurter and Richard Belzer, for example.

I find Stern's viewpoints and humor funny most of the time. I also like it when Gilbert Gottfried is a guest on the show. He is usually very funny.

I only find him funny when he's on the Stern Show, where he has much more freedom with his brand of humor. If you've never heard the Stern Show and when he is on it, then you would not know what I'm talking about. Even if you did, you might not find him funny. Everyone has their own tastes, especially for humor.

I've never heard Gottfried on Stern. I just find it hard that a racially-conscious White, such as yourself, finds Stern's vulgar displays funny.

Prior to cutting off my dish, I would very rarely, I might add, watch his show if he had some of his more peculiar oddities on. For instance, I found the the malformed, drunken nigger midget & his counterpart especially entertaining.

I admit to watching it, even now, when he has the freaks on. LOL. the retarded nigger midget Beetlejuice is so disgusting he gives me nightmares, so I can't watch too often. I have never in my life seen such an odd looking, ugly freak. :eek:

I'm not opposed to dirty humor as long as it's funny. Most of the time I find his show entertaining but some of the vulgarity is beyond my taste.

As far a jewish entertainers most I don't care for but don't consider someone like Seinfield, for example, much a threat like I do jewish intellectuals, activist lawyers, and politicians.
