A Barnard College student who was viciously attacked as she jogged through Manhattan's Riverside Park was awake and talking Wednesday as detectives hunted for the thug.

Marisa Cortright, who just finished her freshman year, was jumped Monday morning and knocked out cold by a mugger who made off with her iPod.

Cortright, 19, remembers little of the incident but was able to talk with detectives from her St. Luke's Hospital bed, police sources said.

She remembered she was approached from behind on a jogging path near W. 120th St. but does not recall the attack, police sources said.

Investigators believe the man jumped Cortright, who is from Salem, Ore., near some tennis courts and sent her hurtling into a concrete wall, police said.

Cortright's head smashed into the wall and she immediately lost consciousness, police said.

She was found sprawled on a park bench, but it was not clear if she crawled there before collapsing or if the mugger placed her there, NYPD sources said.

Cortright suffered bleeding on the brain, a fractured cheekbone, and cuts to her face, head and neck, police said.

Investigators said she was fully clothed and do not believe she was sexually assaulted.

"She's a great girl, and this is awful something like this happened to her," said a woman entering her sophomore year at Columbia University who would not give her name but said she is friends with Cortright.

"It wasn't even like she was running at night or in a dangerous place," the friend said.

Katherine Hanslits, who is entering her sophomore year at Barnard and is an acquaintance of Cortright's, said the location of the attack has left her scared.

"I know that I've walked in Riverside Park, in that area, alone, although not as early as she did," Hanslits, who is also from Salem, Ore., said in a Facebook message to the Daily News.

Cortright stayed in New York this summer to work as a resident advisor for Barnard's high school summer enrichment program, friends said. Her family cut short a two-week European vacation to race to her bedside.

Though still groggy and confused over details of the attack, Cortright was able to provide a basic description of her attacker, the sources said.

Detectives combined her account with descriptions provided by witnesses who saw a man running from the park in the moments after the attack.

The suspect was described as a black man in his 40s, standing 6-feet-2 with a heavy build, police said. He wore a long-sleeve blue shirt and black pants at the time of the attack, police said.

Cortright lives in a Columbia dorm not far from the crime scene and frequently jogs in Riverside Park, police sources said.

Detectives were investigating whether the attack was connected to any other muggings in the neighborhood, the sources said."In light of this and other incidents in the neighborhood, I urge you to take your personal safety into consideration at all times," Barnard Director of Public Safety Dianna Pennetti wrote in an e-mail to students obtained by The News.

A bright-eyed Barnard College freshman was showing signs of improvement yesterday as cops hunted for the hulking thug who savagely mugged her in Riverside Park, leaving her bloodied and unconscious on a bench.

Marisa Cortright, 19, of Salem, Ore., suffered bleeding on the brain, a fractured cheekbone and facial cuts in the attack at 6 a.m. Monday near the West 120th Street tennis courts. She was in stable condition at St. Luke's Hospital.

"People do not deserve to be treated this way, especially those who have made so many people appreciate, laugh and think more than they had before," Marin Fanjoy-Labrenz, 19, Cortright's roommate at Barnard, told The Post.

"She was simply going about her daily workout routine . . . She's a sweet, hilarious girl and a friend to all."

While she jogged, Cortright was grabbed from behind, punched in the face and had her head slammed into a wall by the thug, police sources said. Her iPod was stolen.

Cortright was found by tennis players.

"She doesn't remember anything," a police source told The Post.

Cops released a sketch of a 6-foot-2, heavyset black man in his mid-40s seen leaving the park following the attack.

The man -- described as a person of interest to investigators -- was wearing a bright blue, long-sleeved T-shirt and black pants.

Yesterday afternoon, Cortright appeared groggy as she sat up in her hospital bed under the watchful eye of a nurse.

At Barnard, Cortright is a math whiz who plans to work next semester at the student computing division.

Cortright graduated salutatorian last year from Oregon's West Salem HS.

Her Columbia University Web page shows a happy student smiling in several pictures with pals. Her posts state that she likes baking, partying with friends, listening to gangster rap, and watching "Arrested Development."

Police released a video Saturday of the violent fiend who allegedly preyed on two women in one of the city's largest parks, ramping up efforts to bust him before he strikes again.

The surveillance video shows a man walking on W. 97th St. near Riverside Dr. Monday at 7:30 a.m., about an hour after the second attack in Riverside Park that morning.

The man, who is shirtless, is shown wearing red shorts and carrying an iPod believed to have been stolen from his first victim, Barnard College student Marisa Cortright.

Cortright, who survived the first of the attacks, was jumped while jogging near a path at W. 120th St. about 6 a.m., police said.

She was thrown into a concrete wall and suffered bleeding on the brain, a fractured cheekbone and cuts to her face, head and neck. She is expected to make a full recovery.

As doctors began treating the Barnard College student Monday, another woman was attacked.

Jan Blumenfeld, 48, was grabbed from behind as she walked her dog in the popular 266-acre park near W. 98th St., police sources said.

She was knocked to the ground, punched in the head and repeatedly kicked in the stomach, police said.

Blumenthal, the senior director of operations for Yeshiva University, did not immediately report the assault to police, instead going to her private doctor. She met with detectives Thursday after seeing the media coverage of the earlier attacks.

The violence rattled parkgoers, fearful of becoming the mugger's next victim.

"I'm going to start going to the gym for now instead of exercising in the park," said Barnard student Alyssa Rapp, 21. "I was walking with a girl (earlier) and she was like, 'Man, I can't believe you're going to the park.'"

"I'm looking over my shoulder now," said Jodi Riddick, an upper West Side resident, as she walked with her sister. "I'm not so quick to put on my iPod."

The NYPD has stepped up the number of uniformed and plainclothes cops patrolling the park. They'll also be scanning the park from a police helicopter.

The suspect in both assaults is described as a black man in his 20s, about 5-feet-8 with a thin build and black hair. Though police initially said he was wearing blue shorts at the time of the attack, the video shows him wearing red trunks.

Police have also released a sketch of the suspect. Earlier in the week, cops distributed a sketch of a man originally described as a suspect now who investigators now believe witnessed the attack on Cartridge.

Now believe it or not, I'm really not a fan of rap myself, but just because this girl happened to be listening to it, I would hardly be glad she was assaulted. I certainly hope she is OK and that they find and punish the black fellow that did this.

I really do wish more black youth this same age as this girl were in school like her, rather than on the street causing mischeif like this hood. I understand that not ALL black men are like this but compared to other races the blacks are far more violent prone. It's not just cultural either. I used to live in the bush in Africa. They're a very primitive,violent,and ape like race. It's better to be safe than sorry.

I will admit that my view of the entire world has changed quite a bit.
