RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - A University of Richmond professor was found dead in his driveway after a neighbor reported hearing gunshots, and police were investigating the death as a homicide.

Police had no suspects in the death of Fredric M. Jablin, 52, said Lt. Doug Perry, a spokesman for Henrico County police.

Officers were called by a neighbor Saturday to investigate reports of gunshots and found Jablin's body. His three children, ages 8, 12 and 15, were asleep inside the home and were unharmed.

An autopsy determined that he died of a gunshot wound to the torso.

Jablin was estranged from his wife, who lives in Texas, and the couple's children lived with him, Perry said. He was a management and communications specialist and an E. Claiborne Robins Distinguished Chair with the private school's Jepson School of Leadership Studies. He joined the school in 1994.

``He was a dedicated scholar, a respected teacher and a friend to all of us,'' said Kenneth Ruscio, dean of the Jepson School. ``He provided guidance and support to everyone and personified the school's central mission of service to others.''

What a story. R. MacDonald! Are you sure you haven't lifted this out of Hunter or The Turner Diaries? Say, come to think of it- weren't Richmond and Virginia the head state of the Ole Confederacy? My, my, how things have changed!

Research Symposia The third Jepson Dissertation Awards Colloquium was held on Sunday, March 24, 2002, at the Jepson Alumni Center. While dissertations submitted for the awards could be on any topic, they were required to have substantial implications for understanding leadership. The two winners listed below presented their dissertation research at the colloquium, with Jepson faculty members facilitating a discussion following each presentation. • Albert H. Fein, Gonzaga University There and Back Again: A Phenomenological Inquiry of School Shootings as Experienced by School Leaders • Rebecca Todd Peters, Elon University In Search of the Good Life: A Feminist Critical Theo-ethical Reading of the Globalization Debates General Theory of Leadership Group A leadership studies consortium, led by James MacGregor Burns and comprised of leadership scholars from the University of Richmond, the University of Maryland, and Williams College, held its first meeting at the University of Richmond, March 22-23, to begin a dialogue about integrative theories of leadership. The participants’ belief in the importance of the topic was reinforced by the fact that a reporter from The Chronicle of Higher Education attended some of the sessions. An article written by the reporter appeared in the May 31, 2002, edition of TheChronicle (Section A, pp. 10-12). The next meeting of the consortium will be held at Williams College, June 20-23. Planning for the 10th Anniversary ObservanceAmong the University’s goals for the School at its founding was to “expose the University of Richmond to the world and the world to the University.” The 10th anniversary of the School presents a stellar opportunity to showcase Richmond’s one-of-a-kind contribution to the world. Part of our work this year has focused on event planning--programs, alumni outreach and communications linked to the 2002-03 observance. Fortunately, this landmark anniversary occurs in concert with the start of the Masters in Leadership Studies program, the most significant fundamental program improvement since the School’s start. The launch of this program will reach out to important new audiences for Jepson--established leaders in profit and non-profit sectors. The startup of this signature program--unlike any other nationally--illustrates the deliberate and wise development of the Jepson School while simultaneously showing off the entrepreneurial nature of the Jepson momentum. Marketing for the master's program--which begins in the Fall 2003--is linked to all anniversary planning and will include open houses and presentations about the master's program.

4Jepson Support of University Programs Orator-in-Residence Program The Jepson School contributed financial support for the Orator-in-Residence program, which brought Reid Buckley to campus, October 4-5 for a series of lectures, workshops and a major public address. Sue Murphy, Assistant to the Dean, served on the planning committee for the orator-in-residence events. Urban Affairs and Public Policy Forum Jepson also contributed financial support for the Urban Affairs and Public Policy Forum,Sustainability and the Built Environment, in Spring 2002. Community Programs and Initiatives United Way Loaned Leaders Seminar In August 2001, the Jepson School faculty facilitated a training seminar, held in the Jepson Alumni Center, for executives in the Richmond Area United Way’s Loaned Leader Program. K-12 Initiatives • The Anti-Defamation League's Fight For Your Rights Forum brought anti-bias training to middle, high school, and university students to Jepson Hall on Oct. 19. This was a pre-conference activity for the YouthLead conference. A diverse team of ADL facilitators staffed each workshop. The Forum was designed to be the beginning of the life-long process of anti-bias training that includes challenging each participant to make a personal action plan to alter his or her own behavior outside of the workshop. • Chesterfield County Leadership Development Program. The Jepson School, which was contracted last year to provide instruction in Phase I of the new Leadership Development Program in the Chesterfield County Public Schools, has been asked to continue instruction for Phase II. The sessions will be facilitated again by Monica Gillespie and will be held at the Jepson School, June 24-26, 2002. • Henrico County Youth Service Awards. The Jepson School once again sponsored and hosted the Henrico County Youth Service Awards ceremony and reception. For the fifth year, the County honored youth who had provided outstanding leadership and service to their communities. • James River High School Leadership Studies Center. The Jepson School will conduct an orientation for students enrolled in a new Specialty Center of Leadership Studies at James River High School in Chesterfield County. The James River Leadership Studies Center will begin with 50 ninth graders who will remain at James River for four years, integrating leadership studies into their regular curriculum. The orientation will prepare the students for their new academic experience and will be held at the University.

5• Richmond “City University” Planning Committee. The Jepson School hosted a meeting of the “City University” Planning Committee on February 26, 2002. The committee was appointed by the city manager to develop a leadership development program for city employees.• YouthLead Inaugural Conference. Funded by the president's office and hosted by the Jepson School, the university staged a one-day conference Saturday, Oct. 20 for middle and high school youth. Some 75 young people chose three workshops among 13 presentations, participated in topic-tables at lunch and heard keynoters including A Moment in Time's Dan Roberts and Liz Murray, an inspirational young woman who went literally from homelessness to a scholarship at Harvard University. This was a one-time pilot project that grew from a series of community meetings in 2000 and 2001 and the work of former Jepson Associate Dean Anne Perkins and Visiting Professor Monica Gillespie. Both left the Jepson School in spring, 2001. Presenters included Jepson faculty members, alumni, Richmond's police chief and national spokespersons on topics including youth philanthropy, leaders in schools, outreach to Hispanic youth, and creating adult-youth partnerships for social change. One of the most popular workshops was on "Bullying Is Not Leading," presented by a team from MTV. Evaluations from attendees were overwhelmingly positive.
